CM: European run may not be enough for Fonseca amid domestic troubles – the situation

AC Milan have racked up three Champions League wins in a row and are now expected to make the knockout stages, but that might not be enough for Paulo Fonseca.

As Calciomercato.com recall, Milan were able to score three times and get three more points against Slovan Bratislava last night, but that doesn’t tell the full story. Even the bottom-ranked team in the competition managed to expose the fragilities of a team that are yet to show any defensive stability.

If the victory in the Spanish capital against the European champions Real Madrid was the spark, against the Slovakian team Milan lit the flame of hope in terms of qualifying among the top eight. That in itself is a positive, after opening with wins against Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen.

The fixture list smiles on the Rossoneri because nine points against Red Star, Girona and Dinamo Zagreb in the remaining games – with respect to each opponent – is very much a target on paper. That should secure direct passage to the last 16, which gives a big sporting and financial boost.

Would a five-game winning run in the Champions League be enough for Fonseca to lock up his job? Probably not and the Portuguese coach is aware of this. A U-turn is needed in the league where the difficulties encountered have gone beyond all expectations.

Milan are currently seventh in the standings, nine points away from the Champions League places. For the club, qualifying for the top European competition is simply fundamental. This is why Saturday’s match against Empoli is even more important than the one against Slovan Bratislava.

If there is no turnaround domestically then the scrutiny on Fonseca will only grow. After all, what good is a run in Europe now – against teams Milan absolutely should beat – if there is no prospect of being back next season.

  1. Look, I don’t like Fonseca’s Milan. I don’t like the way they interpret games, I don’t like the structure, I don’t like the mentality…there is nothing about this team that gives me comfort. And I don’t think they have the right coach to take them forward.

    1. Fonseca Milan is far better than Pioli Fonseca is doing a Good job and I must applaud the team is not easy at all in respect of everything Acmilan will turn around the series A table I’m sure of that Acmilan will do extremely better.

  2. There are facts in numbers – statistics and standings wise, showing AC Milan are back with banter era football.

The only difference is, before they were broke and that was their reality. Now they’re financially sound and the brand is one the fastest growing globally but owners decided to be cheap. So it’s a decision taken.

    1. Sure, after spending €200 million, they decided to get a cheap coach to save money! Don’t be soft. There was no one available, that’s why Fonseca was hired.

      1. Sérgio Conceição was available, in fact he might be still available.
        Antonio Conte was available
        Roberto De Zerbi was available.
        Maurizio Sarri is still available.
Even Massimilliano Allegri was available and might be still available.
They could even have pushed for Zidane, Klopp,…
ALL the coaches I’ve named are better or more promising than Fonseca. Stop making excuses for the management mistakes. They only thought of Lopetegui and Fonseca. Whatever ambitions you’ve had or we’ve had for this season, they clearly had something else in mind.

        1. Bro, come on. Zidane and Klopp? I agree with your general sentiment re Fonseca and these coaches, but Zidane is retired and Milan is a step down financially for Klopp. My guess is that Klopp will end up at Madrid to replace Carlo in the summer.

          1. That’s why I named them last. I know realistically they weren’t options, but even if we were desperate we could have tried for them instead of Lopetegui and Fonseca.
Conte was probably the best choice (even though I was against him during the summer), but we would suffer in Europe.
Sarri, Allegri aren’t my favourites either but they are proven coaches in serie A.
Conceição never coached in serie A, but he is a proven winner and made Porto punch way above its weight class.
We have finally De Zerbi who didn’t achieve much, but he is quite young and seems promising.
There are many other names that I didn’t mention, it just so happened that the management targeted some of the worst in Lopetegui and Fonseca.

      2. And where are they after 200 millions spent in two seasons? Out of this, only 60 million trio of Puli, Reijnders and Fofana turned out to be added value. And even they are played out of position and in the system that doesn’t work.

No one else available, that’s a new one🤣

        1. Yep. For a club that professes smart spending this is a total failure. 100M average on 4-5 new players per season, and the midfield is WORSE than when they took over and defense has not improved.

      3. 3 articles now, same nonsense that no one was available?? Out of all the summers in recent memory this has got to be the one of the best to choose a top coach

  3. Please what is the run milan should run and look for solution because if we manage to get to knockout stage we off once we get a better opponent we only need improvement in the league at least we as fans will always be happy to see champions league draws and see Tuesday Wednesday football
