The five key battles that could win or lose the game for Milan against Bologna

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan are getting their 2023/24 Serie A campaign underway with a tricky-looking match away at Bologna on Monday night.

The Rossoneri have got eight new signings to potentially give minutes to at the Stadio Renato dell’Ara, so there is a huge amount of intrigue and pressure.

One of the major battles is going to see Rafael Leao take on Stefan Posch on the Milan left wing as the Portuguese forward seeks to repay the club for giving him a big new contract last season.

Similarly, there is a lot of interest in Christian Pulisic‘s expected Milan debut on Monday and he is going to be trying to get the better of Charalampos Lykogiannis on the other wing.

Having had a lot expected from him at a young age, Joshua Zirkzee should be a man on a mission. He will need to get the better of Fikayo Tomori at the back if he is to get on the scoresheet.

Given Bologna are expected to play in a 4-2-3-1 with Lewis Ferguson as the No.10, Malick Thiaw could find himself dealing with the Scottish player a lot when Bologna have got the ball.
Finally, Michel Aebischer is going to be tasked with limiting the impact of Tijjani Reijnders and his strong runs from deeper in the midfield. It will be a real test of stamina for both players.

  1. After the gm everyone would be like oh why didn’t we get Zirkzee for a striker and Bukema or Lukemi for defence lol 😂

  2. Honestly, I want to see teams try to double mark Leao again and see how we do with attacking threats down the middle and the right wing. Hopefully it creates more spaces for Leao to run into and exploit.
