Florenzi ‘angry’ with Leao and has a ‘smile of regret’ after Newcastle win

By Oliver Fisher -

Alessandro Florenzi admitted that he was angry with Rafael Leao after he missed two big chances to make AC Milan’s night more comfortable against Newcastle United.

Milan beat Newcastle 2-1 at St. James’ Park in the Champions League to secure their place in the Europa League, but the Rossoneri are out of the competition and must settle for a Europa League spot.

Anthony Gordon laid it on a plate for Joelinton on the edge of the box who smashed a superb shot into the top corner to make it 1-0, but Christian Pulisic fired in an equaliser and Samuel Chukwueze came off the bench to score a beautifully taken winner inside the final 10 minutes.

Interviewed by Sky, Florenzi commented on the win against Newcastle and admitted that a second group stage victory was nice but the feeling is not as sweet as it could and should have been.

“A smile of regret. We won and played a great game in the second half. The regret of going down to the Europa League remains, but the objective was clear. Then what happened happened,” he said (via MilanNews).

On Leao: “Everyone knows how important he is. Today I’m angry with him: he should have finished with a brace. A player like him shouldn’t miss those opportunities.”

On the Europa League: “It must be an objective, there are strong teams in the Europa League too. I think we have to look game after game, wait for some returns, but already from tonight we have had many strong changes that we have missed. Whoever came in has gave a lot. Tommaso Pobega also gave two or three tackles.”

  1. It wasn’t Anthony Gordon that made the assist for their goal. It was Lewis Miley.

On topic. I was angry at Leao too 😅 He’s lucky we got away with a win or he’d gotten more criticism.

    1. I think florenzi mentioned the missed chances not just for the reason that Leao should be scoring those chances but if he did Milan would have had a chance at winning the second spot on goal difference.

        1. They changed it a couple seasons back. Its goal difference. All our mistakes in the previous games counted including giving up too much vs Dortmund at home and away vs PSG. If we scored a couple more here less our mistakes we’d be through simply on goal difference

    1. No I was there last night Theo was playing out of position so have to give him credit leao in the first half was absolutely bone idol didn’t want to run didn’t want to track back challenge etc and everyone around us was asking is he fit? because he was that poor a stronger manager would of taken him off at HT
We were lucky to get away with a 1-0 ht score we were awful no shape no ideas no direction 2nd half we had more fight and belief

  2. Come on guys, dont fight .
Leao is not fit 100%, he is unable to run same speed he used to and he is coming back from injury. Regarding the 2goals, 1st goal ball doesn’t curl a lot he has expected and 2nd its almost goal hit the post. No one can predict it.

To his level, he should have got atleast 5chances like this.but he is not fit 100% even lack the regular practice.
But anyway we won and lets see serie A and europa league

  3. Great performance lads ..yes it was . Not the first half but the second we created chances ,,,and could have had four goals …I am not going to give reafeo leao criticism as I thought considering the time out he did well ..yes should have scored at least one goal ,,but he was still a menace to Newcastle. The midfield again suffered a little bit ,,and Loftus cheek and reindeers were both poor ..our defence looked excellent and big Mike was magnificent as was tomori ,,,defended so well and got forward and indeed almost scored a goal ..Olivier Giroud worked hard ,but didn’t influence the game much ,apart from a sublime assist for pulisic to score the goal ..
The substitutions were spot on ….jovic / okafor/ and indeed chukwezzze ..when they came on we completely out played Newcastle .
So my man of the match goes to our coach PILOI .
    A GREAT win ,fully deserved..
Yes it’s the europa leauge ,but that’s not a disaster ,indeed there are some excellent clubs in this competition and indeed it will bring in revenue..
It’s a competition that is worth winning .
So we have a very good team ,,let’s not progress in the leauge .

  4. He is the last person to be complaining about Leao honestly, the guy just came out of an injury…..he had the same chance of scoring, why didn’t he score? Pathetic…..he must REST and focus on scoring, and stop criticizing his team mates!
