Fonseca angry at penalty issue and media sensationalism: “We’re the worst team in the world”

Paulo Fonseca seemed particularly irritated by what he saw during AC Milan’s defeat to Fiorentina last night and the backlash he is predicting after the result.

Milan’s winning run in Serie A was ended on Sunday night as they lost 2-1 against Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in a dramatic encounter that featured three penalties – two for the Rossoneri, all missed – and a late red card for Theo Hernandez.

David De Gea saved spot kicks from Theo Hernandez and Tammy Abraham after Yacine Adli’s opener, then Christian Pulisic’s volley made it 1-1. However, Albert Gudmundsson would strike after to win all three points for La Viola, a damaging result for Fonseca’s side before the international break.

Fonseca spoke during his post-match press conference after the game to assess what was another difficult night for his team, and he gave a couple of interesting responses which were relayed by MilanNews.

What do you think about the penalty situation?

“It must never happen again, I told the players. I’m p*ssed off, the shooter is Christian [Pulisic].”

Now it’s the international break…

“It doesn’t matter if there are rumours, they are not important to me.”

How do you explain the drop in performance levels?

“In Italy when you win you have played a great game. We didn’t score and we are the worst team in the world, just as I am the worst coach. I know how things are, but I can’t be like that.”

  1. Oh surprise the cheapest coach alive lacks leadership and can’t get respect from his top players. Get yourself a “courage” banner to put in your office Paulo 🙂

  2. It would be so funny if Pulisic takes the next penalty and miss lol. Fonseca might not be the best coach and neither was he my choise for coach, but people blaming him for the penalties is ridiculous.

  3. When a team lose 2 penalties it doesn’t matter who is the coach , you are going to drop points in that match.
The first goal conceded wasn’t really a penalty at all. The second goal conceded should have been dealt with by Tomori.
There is nothing else to add . What is apparent is that Fonseca will have to integrate other players into the squad as the Morata/Abraham cannot always play from the start, they will need to alternate.
Can’t really blame the coach for this defeat except for letting the players decide who takes the penalties.
