GdS: Fonseca considering formation change after consistent exposure

AC Milan have regularly been exposed this season, and there are several reasons why. As a result, Paulo Fonseca is now considering a system change.

Across the board this season there have been problems for Milan. Since the summer, there have been complaints about players, the head coach and the management, and Fonseca will look to deflect criticisms with a system change.

Against Slovan Bratislava, the Rossoneri were caught out on several occasions and lost the midfield battle many times. However, this is not a criticism of the midfield pivot but rather the system in which they are playing.

The defence is often left exposed, and it could be argued that the midfield is also left without sufficient coverage, so the Portuguese head coach is looking to change this with the addition of another midfielder.

As Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) write, Fonseca is considering moving away from the 4-2-3-1 system to a 4-3-3 to support the team more.

Should this happen, it seems that Yunus Musah or Ruben Loftus-Cheek would be brought into the side to be the third midfielder, to balance the squad. Perhaps, it would be more a question of personnel if the attack was outperforming themselves to lessen concerns about conceding, but this has not been the case.

A sacrifice in attack is therefore a must.

  1. take Double Left-footed Cheek (DLC) and use Musah ffs… Have Fofana as Ambrosini-esque CDM, Seedorf-esque Reijnders and Gatusso bulldog-like Musah

  2. Fonseca is always changing everything. The team never gets stable enough to foster team play and better understanding between players. At least this time he is proposing the change that most fans have been craving forever, to a 4-3-3. However his reliance on mediocre RLC is concerning.

Even if he promotes a desirable 4-3-3 change, it’s not excluded that soon he will change his mind again and do something silly like going back to 4-2-3-1.

    1. Our solution is to rely on the 4-2-3-1 and change our tactics of play and players now Okafor is not Good at all so leao will step up why Reijnder will shift to attacking midfield then pulisic to wing then musah and Fofana double pivot then Gabbia and thiaw central defence then Acmilan will be playing more of pressing and counter wing attacks into the final third Leao and pulisic will be penetrating box and release a short it becomes a goal why Reijnder will be creating spaces and chances to score more goals then 80 mins Acmilan will shift into a 4-4-2 with Okafor and Tammy Abraham using musah and chukwueze in both wing then Loftus cheek will come and replace Reijnder until we make more signing to help us like bringing leao deputy Armand lauriente then Brahim Diaz for attacking midfield then pulisic and chukwueze will maintain their wing then Ricci will be available plus benercer with this were good to go rather than starting what we cannot finish Acmilan are not playing 4-3-3 our favoured formation is the 4-2-3-1 thank you

      1. We don’t have players for a 4-2-3-1.
Reijnders is a mezzala, not a box to box, nor an attacking midfielder.
        Loftus-Cheek is a mezzala, Musah is a right-midfielder.
Pulisic is a winger, not an attacking midfielder.
The only player in a double pivot that we have is Fofana.

  3. I don’t undestand why Musah, who had one (1) good game this season against Real Madrid, is dropped in favour of Loftus-Cheek who had zero (0) good games this season. It’s not that I like Musah, but we don’t have good midfielders so it’s either him or Loftus-Cheek in a 4-3-3.

  4. Musah instead of (You can’t even see his name that’s how invisible he is) and we’re finally getting some consistency, as long as we keep Gabbia/Thiaw and don’t change it.

  5. Fonseca will change the formation and defense again in the next game too. He has no idea what he’s doing. He should’ve known that before he arrive at Milan instead of forcing Pulisic and everyone else to play out of their natural position. Smh

  6. 4-3-3 is not the perfect solution to me I’ve studied Acmilan for long our perfect idea is our tactics Remember Acmilan playered 4-3-3 against Leverkusen and we lost so you can imagine our problem is not formation our problem is our tactical pattern of play is too we that’s why we haven’t find balance and if Acmilan change formation bet you two to three matches things we be more extra difficult than we think so and if Acmilan lose any more match in serie A due to formation change I will advice Acmilan should sack Fonseca even Loftus cheek is even more worst in our midfield Acmilan should break back and sign wingers, attacking midfield and central midfield Instead of changing formation some of the Acmilan fans does not study game at all we just talk change formation because of imbalance we didn’t look at the player in peach and system of play were busy saying change formation.

    1. “Remember Acmilan playered 4-3-3 against Leverkusen and we lost”
And we’ve also won with a 3-4-3/4-3-3 against Real Madrid.
Our worst games this season were with a 4-2-3-1, you know why ? Because we don’t have the players for a 4-2-3-1.

  7. How many games in? And still can’t work out his best team and formation , he’s now swapping the defense almost every game no consistency no wonder fika and others are making mistakes
All good teams need consistent players and swap amd change as and when needed not every game
Against juve swapped the defenders instead of going for the win that was there for the taking
I could go on but bored of it all now same old …..nothing will change with the yanks in charge spend little and get mediocre managers 🤷‍♂️
But I’ll still be there on sat against empoli making the pilgrimage from the uk for every home game
    Forza Milan

  8. Should definitely be using the 4 3 3. We have no problem scoring goals, we have the problems in the midfield and defence. Adding that third player will balance it out. It’s not like we have a attacking midfielder or a poacher up front. Morata plays more in midfield than he does in the box. That’s why against real madrid musah balanced out the team, Morata got his goal cause he didn’t always have to track back, wingers still stay the same and everybody’s happy. We’re too exposed at the moment to continue like this.

  9. Is the issue the formation or bad choices by the players? First goal- why were the last defenders pushed up so high. Second goal- why when you are up 3-1 do you recklessly push numbers forward. Settle for the 3-1 win. A new formation does not fix stupid.

  10. Nah…that is what we need most.

Don’t use Pioli’s formation anymore. His 4231 is no longer fits the team.

Fonseca must use his own formation, and his own tactics. Even if he got fired at the end, it will better than he try to make like Pioli’s did

    1. His tactics are 4231… used that at lille, used that at roma, used that at shakhtar. Not in Portugal tho. He used 442 or 4231 there.

  11. Can be the solution, but i Rather try 3-4-3 where defence is Gabbia, Tomori, Thiaw , in midfield on wings Theo and Musah , in centre of midfield Raijnders and Fofana , and attack same like always, Leao, Morata, Pulisic…

This can be solution because Theo is better in attacking and he don’t be the last on the left site, Musah same, he show how he can run in match against Real. He will help with defending and be more around midfield.

Or go on classic formation 442

  12. This just makes sense. Chuck isn’t justifying the 231 and they aren’t going to move Puli to RW and give Liberali a starting spot and of course RLC there is just masochistic. If the left and right backs stay wide to support and don’t invert, we will see more clean sheets. That will take pressure off of Leao and Puli. As it is, they go into every match knowing they’ll need to create/score 3-4 chances to give us a safe victory. That’s too much pressure to face every match. This will also allow the 9 to actually play as a 9 and not have to be a 2nd attacking midfielder, that should help Morata score and improve his hold up play. I think a big problem with his poor touches lately is b/c he’s spending too much energy running back to midfield or even further to either receive the ball or play defense. An extra midfielder can cover those tasks and Morata can save his legs.
