GdS: Fonseca could replicate Leao treatment with Theo as struggles continue

AC Milan’s left flank was their strength for a long time, but this season both Rafael Leao and Theo Hernandez have been up and down.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) recall, until a few days ago Leoa was at the centre of criticism and controversy, now it’s the turn of Theo after a poor performance against Cagliari amid a difficult recent period.

Against the Sardinians he didn’t put up any resistance to Zortea and Zappa, showing little in the way of hustle and fight as he did a few nights previous during the 3-1 win over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

Instead, the Frenchman showed the same attitude that Leao had been criticised for on other occasions: too distracted, too soft in his tackles and not very attentive. With the Portuguese, Fonseca decided to try and rekindle his flame by benching him for three league games in a row.

Will he give Theo Hernandez the same treatment? It’s hard to say now, but the Milan coach is thinking about what to do. Filippo Terracciano or Alex Jimenez can play on the left while Davide Calabria could be moved to the other flank also.

We’ll see what Fonseca decides to do, but with Juventus being the next game it would be a very bold call to leave out one of the leaders of the team.

  1. Rubbish. Theo needs competition and there’s NONE. So it doesn’t matter how bad he plays he will ALWAYS be our starter. This is the problem when you don’t have a competitive squad. Players become complacent because there’s no one in the team who can bench them.

And if the coach doesn’t play them like in the case of Leao then the team suffers because the players on the bench are not good enough.

Okafor is not good enough to keep Leao on the bench. Chukwueze is not good enough to keep Pulisic on the bench.

No one in the team is good enough to keep Theo on the bench. Smh

    1. Kind of true, but Theo is a captain. And now let’s compare Frenchman to Maldini – your thesis has fallen into ruins. Theo in defense equals Emerson Royal. Suitcases and good luck in your next club Theo – yes,in January. Hope Leao not gonna stay also in ACM. And one more idea – sell Leao and Theo on LM. Of course in January good left defender will be necessary.but Replacing theo with a better defender won’t be difficult in Italy. Theo and Leao is not our future !! LAZY !!

  2. Lol…
It’s Fonseca who learn lesson from Leao. Fonseca has adapted his tactics to use Leao abilities not that Leao changed himself anything.

It will be same for Theo, playing High line with wide positioning of back 4, expecting Fullbacks in attack and defence. We don’t have player’s of the quality Fonseca expecting.

Fonseca already changed his ball positioning system to counter attack system. As he adapted for Leao, he need to find a system that can use skills of other players too rather forcing players to do something that not possible immediately

      1. Leao is what he is and is the most dangerous player in this team. Whether he wears 10 or 17 doesn’t matter. He creates a lot of danger down that line. Look at the Madrid game – put everyone on ice skates.

His consistency is an issue. But to sell him would be idiotic. Because no replacement for chance creation. And current management won’t spend money to bring established champions into the team.

Leao is as good as we will do for now.

  3. Fonseca clearly lack few important things:
    – defense consistency
    – control of players at least certain ones to get the best of them
    – changing strategy & tactics through the game
    – building on success
This sums up how fit is he for current Milan.
Keeping this in mind we will continue to suffer throughout this season. So we should forget first 4 position.

  4. I don’t think Theo will respond to Fonseca’s disciplinarian tactics as well as Rafa apparently has responded.

Theo is a lot more of an arrogant diva with a short fuse, than Rafa. While Rafa tried to comply with what Fonseca wanted and did make an effort which seems to be paying off, I think in the case of Theo, he will just be even more irritated and unmotivated.

I doubt that Fonseca has what it takes to manage Theo’s ego and discipline issues.

By comparison, Rafa is a much more humble guy, and the fact that Fonseca is also Portuguese may have helped. No such advantage in the case of Theo exists. It will be messy.
