Footmercato: Arsenal join race for Milan-linked striker as Montpellier set price

By Oliver Fisher -

The number of clubs interested in signing striker Elye Wahi from Montpellier continues to grow after AC Milan were initially linked, a report claims.

According to Footmercato, Wahi’s performances are enough to arouse the interest of several French and European clubs, starting with Arsenal, who have been following the player’s development with interest for several months.

At just 20 years old (he celebrated his birthday on January 2), Wahi scored his 20th goal in Ligue 1 in Montpellier’s last game to allow him to become the second player to score 20 goals in Ligue 1 before his 20th birthday in the last 40 years.

Juventus, Tottenham, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool are all watching Wahi, who is a fast striker (he was clocked at 35.28km/h), who has an excellent sense for goal and who can play on the left if necessary.

Arsenal have no plans to make a move just yet because they already have Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah and Folarin Balogun for that role (the latter is currently on loan at Reims) while Montpellier do not want to sell mid-season and are asking for €30m+.

Milan have been linked with a move for Wahi in recent weeks as they too are looking to invest in a centre-forward for the future.

    1. I doubt he will arrive in January. I’d be happy with making an offer to Montpellier now to head off the competition, but with an agreement he can stay there until the end of the season. This might help us get their “yes”, although it remains to be seen if the player will want to come to Milan given all the PL interest.
