Forbes: €40m+ and a star player – what early European elimination will cost Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

The business magazine Forbes have predicted that AC Milan will sell another star player next summer if they are eliminated from European competitions before the new year.

Forbes talk about how damaging the defeat against Borussia Dortmund at San Siro on Tuesday night might end up being for Milan, not only in terms of their sporting ambitions but also the off-field ramifications.

They talk about the financial cost of a second group stage exit in three years. Milan made over $108m (€100m) through a combination of prize money, TV money and gate match day revenue from their run to the semi-finals of the competition last season.

Of course it was always going to be tough to repeat that run, but this was part of the reason the club posted a profit for the first time in 17 years in their 2022-23 accounts. Now, they need to beat Newcastle and hope Paris Saint-Germain lose at Dortmund to qualify, or they will lose out on around €40m compared to last season.

“For a club that runs a tight ship financially, an early exit would likely mean the departure of another key player next summer,” the report mentions. Moreover, Forbes report that Champions League elimination would heap even more pressure on Pioli and ‘make any further stay beyond this season impossible’.

  1. It should’ve been recognized a while ago that change was needed. But we refused, and now we’re in the mess we’ve made ourselves

  2. Why are we crying every year about our Finance but if we would reach the goal we are still stingy to buy big players. Change the Coach and the Medical staff

  3. If we have to sell a player, Maignon has to be the star to go. Although Theo does not seem himself this season, it’s harder to find a left back with his qualities than it is to find a keeper. I like Mike but he might not be all we thought he was.

    1. Yes let’s sell our star players from Mike who made plenty of saves and gave us Scudetto + CL semis. Then next we sell Theo, Leao, Tomori, Benna, Thiaw, Puli etc until there’s only mediocre players in the field.

After we don’t have any star players, people like you gonna cry and ask why we didn’t sit at the top 4 in the league anymore or qualify for CL and demand the club to start buying world class players and fired the manager every 5 match.

Good lord, i can’t wait when we repeat that dark era again. I guess some Milan fans loves watching when Milan suffer huh? :/

Only two words comes to mind here: Drama queen. Actually a couple of more but those are words before those two and there’s some words that might get censored.

        1. I know you’re too young to remember or even experienced Milan dark era after Berlusconi sold Ibra, Thiago, and other star players and replaced them with mediocre players.

Well, when that era repeat again under Cardinale, i’m not gonna come here and say “I told you so” at you.

          Enjoy your day.

LOL. Close, but no cigar. 😀 😀 😀

You know nothing, Jon Snow. Let’s put it this way. I remember falling in love with Milan around the time when MvB won Holland their European Championship. Feel free to Google if you don’t know which year it was and whether it was before or after Milan selling Ibra. 😉

          2. I think his point is why go from 100 to 0? Why is it all or nothing? One departure will mean all departures? It’s just melodramatic. Plus you undermine whatever point you’re trying to make by citing to Berlusconi having to sell stars, so it seems that pretty much everyone has to balance the books, including one of the most successful owners of all time who in the end was even forced to sell the club because he just couldn’t do it anymore. Also, you’re too young to remember, but we finished 11th and 10th for two seasons after winning a title with players such as Weah, Boban, Savicevic, Maldini, Costacurta, Albertini, Rossi, Panucci, all world class players, with coaches such as Capello and Sacchi at the helm.

    2. I disagree. If we have to sell a player it ought to be Hernandez. I think we’ll be able to source a good replacement at LB over GK in this instance (although I will say that generally GK is the most “replaceable” position). Mike has one bad game and he’s being written off? Wow. Theo has always been suspect in defense and now that his offensive production has declined his value to the squad (in footballing terms) will be scrutinized.

  4. Whoever decided to wait for Taremi until the last minute and than get Jovic should be fired. Yesterday. The money lost won’t be 40M but there is also match revenue missing, club world championship money which is also 50M or more, so 100M+, and closer to 150M I would say. You can pay Mbappe PSGs gross wages for almost 3 years with that money, probably more with the growth decree…

  5. Doesn’t matter anymore as long as Milan still in Cardinale hands.

Last season we got plenty of money from CL. But guess what, the fkin Cardinale & Furlani didn’t used those money to buy Puli, RLC, Reijnders, and Musah. Then Furlani said we must sold Tonali to buy new players.

Fvck Cardinale and his puppets Furlani and Scaroni 🙁

  6. Maybe miracles will happen before the end of the season. But selling key player every year is killing us we have so many young players we have to build around them😧

  7. Cardinale sir, we don’t need to sell before we buy. All those big teams sell the players that are not important to them not like you guys doing now. we have an almost 70% strong group but you guys cannot bring 30% this sucks men during maldini&massari if we spent 80m wisely we will be better than now cause they guide us to Semi final
