CM: Four survivors of the 5-0 defeat in 2019 should start against Atalanta

By Oliver Fisher -

There are four survivors of the team that lost 5-0 to Atalanta in the 2019-20 season that should start today against the same opponent, a report has revealed.

Calciomercato.com begin a report by recalling the team that were mauled in Bergamo in December 2019: Donnarumma; Conti, Musacchio, Romagnoli, Rodriguez (46′ Calabria); Kessié, Bennacer; Bonaventura (65′ Piatek), Suso (85′ Castillejo), Leao; Calhanoglu.

It was a disastrous afternoon without a doubt but looking back, the 5-0 defeat at the Gewiss Arena was the last truly dark chapter in Rossoneri’s recent history. From then on, Pioli has led the team on a remarkable resurgence thanks also to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Simon Kjaer’s arrivals, plus the development of young players.

Today is a different game with much more at stake but it shows how far the team have come, as they need a maximum of four points from their last two games of the season to lift the Scudetto and close an incredible cycle.

Looking back at the team from December 2019, Romagnoli and Castillejo are still in the squad but neither will start today. Piatek ended up leaving after his struggles, while Leao is one of the best wingers in Serie A and Theo Hernandez makes the left flank deadly.

Kessie should start today as he did in 2019 and he has a past against Atalanta given he played for them and scored twice last season in the game that sealed a return to the Champions League. Then there is Bennacer, who from that 5-0 has gradually climbed the hierarchy of the midfield to become one of the leaders. Finally, Calabria – who will wear the captain’s armband today – also came off the bench.
