This afternoon, a stat has emerged about Matteo Gabbia and how much AC Milan actually rely on the defender’s performances.
There has been a lot said about Milan’s talismen this season and the focus has often been on Adrien Rabiot and rightfully so. For most of the season, the stats have pointed in his favour when it comes to performances.
Statistically, Rabiot has been the key player when it comes to points per game collection, but the recent form suggests that he may not be the glue keeping it all together. He definitely helps, but it seems the focus should be directed elsewhere.
Gabbia’s influence
As MilanNews writes, the defeat against Udinese was the seventh of the season for the Rossoneri; split five in Serie A, one in the Coppa Italia and another in the Supercoppa Italiana.
Barring the loss to Cremonese – loss one of the campaign – Matteo Gabbia has never been present for any of the other defeats, more recently due to the injury suffered before the Parma game.
The Italian has already been identified by Massimiliano Allegri as one of the key pillars for next season and it is clear to see why. However, it will be interesting to see how he would be utilised in a back four and what investment would also arrive.

Oh no, you didn’t. 🍿
I dont get why people hate on gabbia, he is a smart defender and uses his strengths to even out his weaknesses. But people also dont really know how to judge defenders and try to judge them like any other position.
They don’t hate him.
They like playing fantasy football in their heads and can’t wait for the season to end so they can get into the real sport of speculating on the transfer market.
I do hope Milan stick with Allegri and Gabbia. If I’m ever to return to supporting the club these two are essential.
He’s just not flashy enough for Gerry boys here. Gerry boys need new toys every season or two and not home made ones.
Noah Okafor takes down the “mighty” Manchester United
Imagine the club had just kept Okafor instead of wasting everyone’s time with Nkunku.
Like Costacurta, Gabbia might not be the fastest or the strongest, but his passing, vision and on pitch IQ is what sets him apart from the rest of our defense.
Exactly.
His reading of the game and leadership are essential.
Thanks for putting in the effort to write this.
Milan never lost a game in serie a where Nkunku starts…
i think if we are to play with a back 4 i would pic as such
estupinian x de winter x gabbia x athekame
if its a back 3 then
pavlo x gabbia x de winter or tomori
