Matteo Gabbia is confident that AC Milan will turn around their poor start to the season, admitting that a change in tactical instructions and training methods has required a period of adaptation.
Milan have not had the best start to 2024-25 as they went into the first international break winless, with two points out of nine obtained which puts them just above the relegation zone.
Not only that, but the defensive problems from last season have continued. The Rossoneri have conceded six goals across the three matches – two in each – which means they have the joint-worst defensive record.
That has actually led to calls for Gabbia to get more minutes, given that when he returned early form his loan spell at Villarreal he was one of the best performers in the second half of last season.
Gabbia spoke to DAZN three days before the Serie A season resumes after the international break with a game against Venezia at San Siro, and his comments were relayed by MilanNews.
It hasn’t been the best start to the season…
“We had a good pre-season and now we have started the year not in the best way, looking at the results. But I am sure that with daily work, with the unity of the group, following the things that the coach asks of us, I am sure that we will turn this season around and bring positivity within the team and the environment.”
what is different with Fonseca at the helm?
“Certainly some tactical instructions have changed, some training methods. The team is trying to do the best they can: the type of training has changed, some physical loads. We are all very happy and all rowing in the same direction: consequently I am sure that we will see excellent results”
How positive is Alvaro Morata’s arrival?
“Alvaro is definitely a champion, he brought not only technical qualities but also a lot of leadership and personality. Obviously we miss him, without taking anything away from those who are playing at the moment.
“He is a player who, even if he doesn’t play and only trains, transmits a lot, he is a really important part of the group. The team and I are happy that he is here, he will give us a big hand.”
Pierre Kalulu went to Juventus…
“Pierre is a player who was very important to us, then different decisions were made. On a human level we are very sorry, I wish him the best for him as a person and as a player. These are things that can happen in football.”
What are Milan’s objectives for this season?
“The role that Milan must have in the championship and in the Champions League is a leading role. We must try to play all the games in the best possible way, leaving everything we have on the pitch.
“Then at the end of the year we will see what work we have done but the Milan shirt requires you to always aim for the maximum and that is what we will do.”
Gabbia seems like a very humble and nice guy. Hope he gets a start this weekend!
Every time the preseason goes well the season is rubbish.
