Gabbia: “I’m happy with what I’ve done, but I always keep my feet on the ground”

AC Milan defender Matteo Gabbia believes the 2020-21 campaign will provide an opportunity for him to show off his development.

Gabbia burst onto the scene in the second half of the 2019-20 season as Stefano Pioli battled an injury crisis, with Mateo Musacchio and Leo Duarte missing long periods, plus further injuries to Simon Kjaer and Alessio Romagnoli.

The young man from Varese – who spent time on loan at Lucchese, a test in a club that was struggling to avoid relegation in Serie C – showed his personality despite his young age.

The hopes are high for Gabbia ahead of a season in which the club will participate in three competitions and will play over 50 games, provided they reach the Europa League groups.

Gabbia spoke to Milan TV on Wednesday about the return to training and his ambitions for the upcoming season, with his words transcribed by MilanNews.

“I am happy to be here again this year, it is a source of pride. I will give my best as always. We are working well from the beginning,” he said.

“Last year we finished well, but we want to do more. Better. We are working hard as a defensive department, we know each other more and more. We have to start the season well.

“We are all happy to have started again, but we know we have to train hard because what we did last year is part of the past . We want to take away a lot of satisfaction this season.”

On the fans: “I greet them, they are always with us. Even if they can’t come to the stadium, I know they are always close to us”

On his growth: “Last year I had the opportunity to show off, I’m sure there will be an opportunity to do it again this year. I’m happy with what I’ve done, but I always keep my feet on the ground because I want to prove my worth again this year.”
