Guardian: Games abroad allowed under new FIFA proposals – the situation after Milan-Como

Earlier this season, AC Milan were expected to play a game against Como in Australia, with San Siro already in use. However, the plans fell through. In the future, they may not.

The topic of Milan vs. Como in Australia lasted for months. From the summer, there were questions about how the Rossoneri would overcome the scheduling of the game and a game abroad was suggested in the early stages.

All parties were seemingly in favour of the idea, barring the players and managers, until it reached the Asian Football Confederation, who were against it. Not long after that, the plans were binned and the game was magically rescheduled, which, of course, couldn’t have been done beforehand.

Now, that case study is being studied again, thanks to new FIFA proposals.

New FIFA protocol…

As The Guardian reports, domestic leagues would be limited to ‘staging one game a season in a foreign country’. The new protocol would see games considered if ‘all major shareholders agreed’ with FIFA then having the final decision.

Under the new protocol, the FIGC, the confederation and then the FA of the host country would have to agree, then it would be passed to FIFA. Importantly, Serie A, again in this case, would have no say in the matter. Though it is unlikely that they wouldn’t be consulted.

The idea internally at DFIFA is to have the protocol in place for next season, so perhaps the Milan-Como case study could be revisited and retried next year.
