GdS: The background on Milan’s alleged interest in Conte – ‘One-man show’ evident

By Isak Möller -

Antonio Conte was heavily linked with a move to AC Milan prior to joining Napoli, allegedly in talks with Zlatan Ibrahimovic to take over from Stefano Pioli. However, as a report highlights, the experienced veteran was never close.

Several managers were linked with the Rossoneri, especially after the season came to an end, but Conte’s name was perhaps mentioned a bit more than others. As we highlighted on Substack already in November, the former Inter man was never an option.

As highlighted by Gazzetta dello Sport earlier today, the possibility of Conte replacing Pioli never took off and it was never truly an option. The manager himself was open to speaking to Milan, but the latter never did more than a quick evaluation of his name.

The reasons for this are obvious, especially after Conte’s recent press conference during which he made it clear that he wants to be in charge. A long list of ‘I’, in the sense of I say, I do, I decide, I command. A ‘one-man show’, as the newspaper puts it, and this is the exact opposite of what Milan wanted.

Conte has a high salary and demands significant movement on the mercato, while Milan wanted someone who can work with the future in mind and also with talents. Not to suggest that the 54-year-old is a bad manager, quite the opposite, but just not the right man for the Rossoneri.
