GdS: Bennacer over Musah and defensive change – latest indications ahead of Monza game

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will have their final training session before the game against Monza today, and some indications have arrived about the team Stefano Pioli is likely to select.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) reports that those players who started against Newcastle trained separately yesterday, doing only athletic work, and Pioli finished with a practice match.

The main news is that Yunus Musah is not feeling at his best: he was already tired before Newcastle-Milan and did not recover. It’s almost impossible for him to be on the pitch tomorrow, especially from the start.

The midfield will therefore have to change and the candidate to play from minute one is Ismael Bennacer over Yacine Adli, who returned to the pitch two weeks ago against Frosinone and was among the best last weekend against Atalanta. He will probably play next to Tijjani Reijnders.

For the other surprise, we turn to the defence. The key man here is Simon Kjaer, who trained with the team for the first time yesterday. Pioli will evaluate today whether to start him and the feeling is that a lot will depend on the Dane and how he feels after the muscle injury that has kept him out since the end of October.

Pioli also tried Bartesaghi as a full-back yesterday and even a three-man defence, a solution that would allow Kjaer to be protected but would be difficult to put into practice with the players available. It seems to be a battle between Kjaer and Jan-Carlo Simic for the last spot in the rearguard.

You want an attacking midfielder to play a defensive role, and a defensive midfielder to play an attacking role?

And this somehow makes sense to you?
