GdS: The ‘all-rounder’ vs. the ‘bomber’ – the most important duel in Atalanta-Milan

Ederson and Tijjani Reijnders are of huge importance to their respective head coaches, and Atalanta vs. AC Milan could be decided in the midfield as a result.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) writes, Ederson is so crucial to Atalanta that Gian Piero Gasperini used him as a metaphor about a months ago, stating: “He is proof that in football things are constantly changing, there is nothing static.

Atalanta’s action man

When he arrived in Bergamo he was an attacking midfielder, now he sits in front of the defence and does a lot of the ‘dirty work’, recovering the ball and starting attacks. He can also chip in with goals too, as the one against Genoa shows.

He has shown an ability to read the evolution of the action before others, and his physical qualities allow Atalanta to sustain their frenetic pace for the entire duration of the match. The Brazilian has become ‘a formidable all-rounder’ under the Italian coach.

The eyes of the Premier League have been on him for some time, and Atalanta look to have won another operation after signing him from Salernitana in 2022. Tomorrow evening against Milan he will once again be the ‘balancer’ together with Marten de Roon in midfield.

Reijnders on fire

With six goals in the last eight games, Reijnders is in the form that a top striker would hope to be. The Dutchman knows how to do everything: he runs like a midfielder, creates like a playmaker, has the ball control of a winger and (now) shoots like a striker.

The 42 days of magic began on October 22nd against Club Brugge in the Champions League, continued with the winner against Monza, one at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid, a brace against Empoli and then a rocket against Sassuolo.

When he scores his next goal, Reijnders will have already doubled last year’s tally, which was four across all competitions. Part of the credit for the recent acceleration naturally goes to Fonseca, who has made him the cornerstone of his Milan.

It also goes to Youssouf Fofana who is the man who gives balance to the team, allowing the former AZ Alkmaar man to push up as much as he does. For the rest, the credit all goes to Tijj, with a well-earned renewal imminent.
