GdS: Pay rise, release clause and fine – the full details of Leao’s imminent renewal

While the action on the field last night did not provide much in the way of positives, news regarding the imminent renewal of Rafael Leao certainly helped.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) are reporting that after months and months of negotiating, Leao will sign a new agreement in the next few hours that will see his deadline shifted from June 2024 until 2028.

Yesterday the decisive acceleration arrived around lunchtime, which is when the €22m bank transfer from Lille was sent to Sporting CP for the fine due because of Leao’s move to the Ligue 1 side in 2018.

The winger will therefore pen fresh terms with Milan, moving from €1.5m to €7m net per season in addition to a €2m signing bonus, making him the highest paid player on the team.

The work of the Rossoneri management was also decisive in this affair, with the CEO Giorgio Furlani, the technical director Paolo Maldini and the sporting director Ricky Massara directing the operations.

In addition to a higher salary, in Leao’s new contract there is also another important note: his release clause will go from the previous €150m to €170m. Lille meanwhile will get a percentage of the proceeds from a future resale.
