GdS: How Pioli plans to replace Bennacer for second leg against Inter

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli will be without Ismael Bennacer for tomorrow night’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Inter, and for the rest of the season in fact.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) recalls, Bennacer injured his knee in the first leg and will be out for a long time as he is even undergoing minor surgery to correct the issue, forcing Pioli to change his plans.

For the derby it seems as though he has made his choice: the central attacking midfielder will be Brahim Diaz, while Alexis Saelemaekers will be on the right flank of the attack.

It is of course a change of line-up but it might also constitute a change in tactical approach, because Bennacer very much played as a disruptor in the games against Napoli and Lazio, ahead of the midfield double pivot to press high and cause issues in build-up for the opponent.

This is not something that Brahim Diaz’s playing style is conducive to, but he does have more attacking qualities which could be useful given two goals are needed.

  1. We need goals, nothing else. Let’s start players who have tendencies of scoring like Messias and pobega to help Giroud. Diaz and Alexis are not capable of scoring.

    1. You make a good point, although Alexis is doing ok recently. Id go for Leao if fit, Diaz in the middle and Messias.

A small part of me wants to see CDK play, score a hattrick put us through. Good for the team, his confidence and next season. Unlikely to happen, but if it does, you heard it here first 🙂
