GdS: Juventus hopeful of Edgar Davids déjà vu after obtaining €14m Kalulu clause

Pierre Kalulu’s move from AC Milan to Juventus went somewhat under the radar considering it was a transaction between rivals, but now it is beginning to attract a fair bit of media attention.

In football as in life you need to know how to seize the moment, and La Gazzetta dello Sport write how that is exactly what Kalulu did. He was discarded by Milan, given that last season he was more injured than used and didn’t feature in Paulo Fonseca’s plans, but now he is resurgent at Juve.

The Frenchman was the protagonist of a sort of sliding doors this summer because Jean-Clair Todibo was the first choice for the Bianconeri but he vanished and they turned to the former Lyon man. He didn’t say yet to Juventus immediately because he was afraid of not getting minutes given the presence of Bremer, Luca Gatti and Danilo in that position.

The coach was instrumental in convincing him to change sides with a phone call. Thiago Motta reassured him, explaining that there is no permanent position for anyone and that with work it is always possible to climb any hierarchy.

Milan let him go without regrets but now perhaps there is a hint of it, especially after seeing him on the pitch in the last few matches with good performances both against RB Leipzig in the Champions League and in the league against Cagliari.

Juve believe they have got an excellent deal because they paid €3m for the loan but secured a €14m option to buy plus bonuses. If he continues to maintain these standards, it is unlikely they won’t use that option because he is young (24) and has ample room for growth.

Milan might be fearing a new Edgar Davids case, the Dutch midfielder who was signed from Ajax but offloaded to Juve after a season and a half of injuries and turbulent form. He became a mainstay in Turin, winning three league titles.

  1. Might be a valid comparison here, albeit a bit premature and stretched, might be not.
To my eyes the primary regret here is that we got Emerson Royal. To make it worst, we paid a substantial sum of money for him.
    So far, just awful business.

  2. so right now it doesn’t look like the best move especially if he returns to form like the Scudetto year! this was a great capital gain for Milan, purchased for less than 1 million euro and sold for 3 plus 14 million euro. They trigger the option to buy and he gets injured again for 3 months, then the article will be how we made out like bandits!! Get used to this Milanisti, this is how redbird will roll, keep some key players build the foundation, buy low and sell high all the rest!

  3. Always rated Kalulu. Surely if injuries are prevalent then backroom staff need to be questioned.
Could be worse, could have sold him to Inter…..
