GdS: Why Milan believe Leao and Thuram would be a formidable duo

AC Milan want to improve their attack this summer and they dream of partnering Rafael Leao with Marcus Thuram as the two leaders of the forward department.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) talks about how Milan are competing with PSG to sign Thuram on a free transfer. He will leave Borussia Mönchengladbach after four years in Germany with 44 goals in 134 games to his name.

The paper adds that Thuram and Leao would form a great duo in transition and on the counter-attack, which has been Milan’s true specialty under Stefano Pioli. The side are at their best when they can win the ball back and move it up the field at speed, which Leao and Thuram could certainly do.

The two are very compatible. Leao runs at the goal from a distance, while Thuram on the other hand is very good when he can attack the spaces, using his speed, physicality and sense for goal.

The problem is that neither of the two are really prolific scorers, because Thuram has never scored more than 16 goals in all competitions in a single season, which was 2022-23. However, there is no doubting that he is a different and perhaps more complimentary option than Giroud.

  1. Being good on the counter attack isn’t the problem though, breaking down a low block is where we need to improve to gain most points.

He’s signing for Paris anyway so that’s a fairly moot point.

  2. Beats me why PSG would even be remotely interested in a player that’s not gonna make them more competitive, similar to the Sanchez signing. What’s even more concerning is why players opts for a bigger salary and sit on the bench. But gone are the days where personal ambition was built around playing and setting the world alight, and not pocketing the biggest paycheck without making a difference. But i suppose we all have our internal drivers…lest I sound like a jilted lover…

    1. Because Mbappe is his friend + 7mil salary with easy bonuses that makes it up to 8.5 mil + He considers paris home. But we should do everything in our power to sign him. He fits the striker profile Pioli would be looking for.

    2. You people keep making up a story that he will warm the bench in Paris. And who exactly is going to play? Messi left and they want to get rid of Neymar. So, who exactly will play in front of Thuram if they will play with 2 wingers and 1 striker? Mbappe and him have been playing together since they were kids, they played in all young national teams and now in the adult one. They are obviously trying to sign him to play in the first team with Mbappe as they are trying to get him to stay at PSG even after this season, they are basically granting him a wish to play with who he wants. I have read this a 100 times in comments. “He will warm the bench at PSG and he would play at Milan”. Well Pioli told him he might warm the bench for Giroud, and I think it is an insult for anyone. Why would he join Milan over playing with Mbappe at PSG, in his hometown? I mean even if he came to Italy, why would he join Milan and not Inter or Juventus, where his father played? Barcelona is also interested, his father played there as well. So he will join Milan to earn less money and hope that he will play in front of Giroud and that the owners will not change the coach and the recruitment team after a bad season? You are talking about ambition and he should join a club that has no ambition, limiting player signings to 30M gross and publicly saying everyone is sellable at Milan. Sounds promising…

  3. he will regret it signing for PSG cos Nagelsmann makes Osimhen request, except he signed a year contract with option to extend so he can leave for free next season

  4. Ndicka -fail
    Thuram -fail
    50 mil budget -fail
    Kamada -50/50
Not looking so good for Moncada and Furlani so far, but the next two months will tell the tale
