GdS: Leao’s €175m release clause hours from expiration – what this means for Milan

By Euan Burns -

The release clause allowing clubs to sign Rafael Leao from AC Milan will expire at midnight on July 15, meaning any future move will be determined purely by negotiation.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Milan News), Milan will both lose and gain some protection when it comes to Leao in the transfer market.

Assuming the clause is not triggered before midnight CEST, there will now be no upper limit as to what fee Milan could get for Leao if he were to leave the club.

What it does mean is that if a club bids much less than €175m, Milan cannot just refer them to the release clause. They have to reject it or negotiate and right now, Leao is not worth €175m to any club.

Leao has shown no interest in leaving the club this summer and given he had a fairly underwhelming 2023/24, there has been almost no interest in him from big clubs like Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

The most serious interest has come from Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, but they were not willing to meet the €175m release clause.

Leao is currently on holiday after the 2024 European Championship and will soon return to training and begin work with compatriot Paulo Fonseca.

  1. Even the hugely exciting Saudi league don’t want to pay the 175 mil release clause… can’t wait for the whole league to follow the Chinese one down the toilet. As for Leao, he did look sharp in the Euros but I’m slightly worried about Fonseca’s system reducing his impact as, like Kaka, he needs lots of wide open space and the wind in his hair.

      1. Leao had good Euro. He was the only one creating something. Martinez had an awful Euro trying to cater to CR7.

        Understand the difference.

        1. Yeah that was ugly to watch that good generation waste their Euro to please Cristiano Ronaldo but Leao was good, especially against France during the first half he was the main threat of Portugal.

        2. He was only one creating something yet he had 0 assists and Portugal scored 5 goals ? So something doesn’t up there. He had 3 attempts on goal 2 were blocked and 1 went out wide. He covered on average 6.75 km and I think that speaks to a volume. He created 4 chances but so did Joao Felix who played less than him. I know that he is a Milan player but calling that good is so biased and untrue.

          1. I guess you didn’t watched the games. Cause for a attacking player that was nowhere near good or okay. Stats are there just as proof. He needs to step up.

          2. As others have just said, just look at the games again, not at the statistics. Leao was one of the best in Portugal’s team.
Also stats might provide some initial idea about a player, scouters are going to matches to see the players live, they do not recommend transfers based on stats.

          3. Leao did in the EUROs what he does in Milan: get past the defender only to deliver a ball to no-mans-land. His end product is still lacking.

What good does a brilliant run do if the ball ends up to the defending team 2 seconds later?

      2. What are you talking about, he showed off incredible diving skills. Well I guess he actually still needs to work on that since he was carded twice.
