GdS: Milan’s biggest summer call concerns Pioli – the rest will follow

By Oliver Fisher -

Despite the fact that there are still plenty of games to play and points to fight for, plus a Europa League trophy to try and lift, the AC Milan management are taking stock of the future.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport report this morning, the team are of course focused on preparing for the final few months of the season and in particular the round of 16 of the Europa League, with the first leg of the last 16 stage taking place tomorrow at San Siro against Slavia Praha.

It is a competition in which the Rossoneri want to go all the way, getting to the final in Dublin at the end of May and hopefully hoisting the trophy high into the Irish night.

In the league, however, the maximum that they can aspire to is second place. This summer the leaders will have to work to close the gap with Inter which is currently 16 points, and part of this will be apportioning blame after a disappointing domestic campaign.

The source claims that the first major decision that those in charge will make is regarding the future of Stefano Pioli, and it will not be taken lightly given Milan have not changed coach since October 2019.

Gerry Cardinale, Giorgio Furlani, Geoffrey Moncada and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are also aware of an unavoidable fact: the choice on who will be the head coach heading into 2023-24 will inevitably influence the market.

Once a final decision is made on Pioli, and also potentially his replacement, they will then know which signings to go for to fit the tactical approach and formation of the manager. The centre-forward, of course, is the main signing to make.
