Alessio Romagnoli and Simon Kjaer will be the centre-back pairing at the start of this season. However, Milan also need competent alternatives for rotation, which is something that they are lacking for the time being.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, it’s no secret that Stefano Pioli likes Nikola Milenkovic a lot, as well as Federico Chiesa. Both will expire in 2022 but Fiorentina have made their demands clear: they are unsellable bar any big offers.
Milan admire both players, as said, but the hidden work mainly concerns the Serbian international. La Viola value him at around €40m, which is a figure that the Rossoneri can’t pay for the time being.
They could, however, try to secure the 23-year-old with ‘Tonali-esque’ offer: a paid loan with an option to buy and bonuses on top of that. It remains to be seen if Milan will make a move, though they would have to sell a defender first.
The most likely suspect is Leo Duarte, who has been disastrous during pre-season so far, failing to perform against lower-level sides Novara and Monza.
