GdS: Milan have enquired about De Zerbi in recent days – the €15m issue

By Ben Dixon -

With Stefano Pioli’s reign as AC Milan’s head coach all but over, his heir is being decided. Today, a report has suggested that the Rossoneri have enquired about one of their favourites.

Everyone knows Pioli’s inevitable fate, and he has shown signs of this in his recent press conferences. However, the club are sticking to their word and will wait until the end of the season to announce that they will change their head coach.

Several names have flown about, and it could be argued that Milan’s reluctance to leave safety has cost them on some occasions, given some of their targets may join other clubs. For example, look at Thiago Motta, who the Rossoneri are desperately trying to claw back.

An option that remains viable, though, is Roberto De Zerbi, and Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) have reported that in recent days, the Diavolo have enquired about his services and have had a response.

As a manager, De Zerbi fits the profile of what Milan desires – a young head coach with an innovative brand of football that excites. Above all, though, he has an exceptional record with improving young talent.

There is a drawback to this – it will cost €15 million to release him from his contract with Brighton, and chances of a discount on this are slim.

      1. give me your other options? Fonseca? Lopetegui?

Or giving Conte something like 8/9M per season only for him to fall out with the management later on?

          1. Agree with Motta, although I am guessing he will end up at Juve, Sarri’s make sense but I think this management is trying to find young manager.

Ten Hag in the other hand, will have problems with Theo, Leao, and Tomori before winter come Hahaha.

  1. Managers are the same players; they have a contract and a subsequent release fee.

The better the player or manager, the more the fee.

RDZ is definitely worth the €15M. After all, your manager is the most important signing you can make.

RDZ is for sure the best one ‘available’ out there for Our needs. His signing would make my summer.

  2. Honestly he is not worth paying 15 million over, he has not won anything as a player and as a Coach, his limitations are their for all to see, even in Europe Brighton were average, and were humbled by Roma.
People will say many things about his game, but for all his bravado and attacking football, their are clear faults about him defensively, the only Italian Coachs who could work right now for Milan are Gasperini or Motta, because they are brave enough to implement certain things Italian coaches are not brave enough to do, if we cannot get either one of them, then we should go for Sergio Conceico of Porto or Van Bommel, they can work with what we have, and what we could buy within the budgets of the club.

  3. Oh boy, now we’ll have a month of daily articles how Milan is getting closer to signing De Zerbi , how Milan has agreed terms with De Zerbi but needs to agree with Brighton, how Milan is trying to find ways around the 15 mill clause by offering them Origi or Ballo Toure… How in the end, Bayern or Tottenham or some other team will swoop in and signs De Zerbi.

End of story, it’s all rumors… if Milan was serious, they’d already get him instead we have more rumors for Conceisao, Fonseca, Van Bommel, etc.

  4. I don’t know why people are against him but I’m excited to be linked with him. Such an attractive game he plays and his tactical adjustments in game are amazing. Give him his shot at a big club and it’s the team he loves and he will flourish. For me, it’s between him and motta at this point. I would gladly pay the 15m release clause than to get Fonseca, van bommel or lopetegui. Will be wasting that money anyways when we fire them mid season and have to pay them out.

Give de zerbi two years with this team with the players he wants and we will be happy

  5. If it’s between Van Bommel and him, I would rather take Van Bommel 10 out of 10, he has already won trophies as a Coach, has played in the biggest leagues in Europe for massive clubs, was the first foreigner to be Bayern Captain, has won trophies in PSV, Barca, Bayern and AC milan, has played under the best tacticians of the time, in Holland, Spain and Germany, including “Allegri”, was a mainstay of the Dutch National team, played in WC’s and Euro’s, and was assistant to many good coaches after he retired, he loves Milan, knows the city and the club , he is a perfect fit more than De Zerbi, paying 15 million is what our club will never do for an untested and unproven coach, they were right to stay clear of Conte.
He is unstable and honestly limited tactically and technically…
