GdS: Milan listen to Maignan after Udinese incident – Cardinale also reached out

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan appears to have gotten the support he needs from the club following the racial abuse he received against Udinese on Saturday night.

As highlighted by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Milan News), the goalkeeper has had his thoughts and feelings listened to by the club and been given the opportunity to say whatever he feels is necessary about the incident.

Maignan began leaving the pitch during the first half of Milan’s 3-2 win over Udinese in Udine on Saturday night, later explaining that he kept hearing monkey noises from the Udinese fans behind him.

Having tried to ignore it the first time, he opted to walk off when it kept happening, leading to a pause in the game.

Milan decided not to post on social media at all for 24 hours following the game as a show of solidarity with Maignan.

Also, club owner Gerry Cardinale has written personally to Maignan to offer his support, something that Maignan appreciated.

Sunday at Casa Milan was reportedly a day of meetings, in which club officials tried to come up with new ways to combat racism in Italian football stadiums, an issue that seems to come up at least once a season.

  1. The statement from the Bianconeri Curva Nord:

“About fifty cameras, microphones, law enforcement, 25,000 people in the stadium, and the only one who heard these alleged racist chants was Maignan??? FIFA President, who remains indignant after profiting as much as possible from football, CONI President who condemns the gesture, which, however, has not been verified by any law enforcement or sports judge! People condemning our stand because someone heard at the bar that Caio’s mom, told by Sempronio’s sister, heard from a friend who saw on the news that… What are we talking about?! Like sheep, on TV or on social media, they say something, and everyone believes it? Before defaming a fan base, a people, a nation, there should at least be some evidence.”

Man, they’re lowest of the low.

      1. But yeah. Based on that statement alone I hope they get relegated first to B and then to C. Pathetic people. They don’t deserve to see any live football ever again. Idiots.
