AC Milan must summon the spirit of 1999 if they are to win the Scudetto by getting the necessary result against Sassuolo on Sunday.
La Gazzetta dello Sport recalls how Milan won the Scudetto on the final day on 23 May 1999 and they celebrated thanks to seven consecutive victories to end the season, back when Alberto Zaccheroni was in charge.
It was on Easter Eve of that season when a 0-0 draw against Sven Goran Eriksson’s Lazio meant that Milan remained seven points behind, but they kept going and beat Lazio on the penultimate day of the season, then beating Empoli with three goals from Oliver Bierhoff.
This time Milan do not have to win to guarantee the league title but the tension is still high after 11 years without a league title, and it must be noted that playing Perugia was not the same situation as playing Sassuolo, though they won 2-1 that day and the same result would do just fine this time.
