GdS: Milan player ratings for Dortmund draw – a mixed bag for the attack

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan fired a blank again in the Champions League as they were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw against Borussia Dortmund last night.

Both sides will feel like they had chances to win it, with Dortmund on top in the opening 45 minutes but with Olivier Giroud and Samuel Chukwueze missing golden opportunities in each half for the Rossoneri.

La Gazzetta dello Sport have published their ratings for the game this morning, starting with the team’s overall performance and Stefano Pioli’s management of the contest, both of which were given a 6.5 out of 10.

Rafael Leao was the best performer on the field in the eyes of the paper as he got a 6, while Olivier Giroud struggled with the pace and intensity of the game, missing a big chance too and getting a 5.

Mike Maignan had a fairly quiet night all told and got a 6, while full-backs Davide Calabria and Theo Hernandez were both careless in each phase and scored a 5.5.

The centre-back pairing of Malick Thiaw and Fikayo Tomori drew praise, with the former Schalke man getting a 6.5 on his return to Germany and the Englishman a 6.

In midfield Yunus Musah rose to the occasion, being awarded a 6.5, with Tijjani Reijnders scoring half a point less and Tommaso Pobega recording a 5.5, which is the same as Christian Pulisic got.

Yacine Adli did well off the bench to change the pace of the game and scored a 6.5, while Samu Chukwueze missed two good chances and got a 5.5, and Noah Okafor a 6.

  1. Anyone saying we deserved more – BVB had 3 shots on target with 10 off target while Milan had 2 on target and 7 off target. BVB also dominated in possession and crosses inside the box.

It’s simple, they flopped. And it’s dragging since Inter fiasco. They come in game scared and static then they explode in second half. It’s same pattern for last three games.

Even after spending 55 millions on them, right wing is still non exsistent when it matters and they’re still Leao dependant.

      1. 1.65xG to .98xG

We had a higher Expected Goals which takes into account the likelihood of scoring each shot. Which tracks with the game i just watched. the person above just selected some less useful stats to support their narrative. Stats don’t lie but they make it easy for people to.

    1. “BVB had 3 shots on target with 10 off target while Milan had 2 on target and 7 off target. BVB also dominated in possession and crosses inside the box.”

LOL. Stats are everything, right? 😀 😀 😀

Surely you didn’t watch the game but just looked at the stats. There’s the quantity of things and then there’s the quality of things. Giroud’s sitter. Chuckie’s sitter. Reijnders’ half open net. Theo’s diving header. Sure… Dortmund had waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better scoring chances, right? Like the shots from 20 meters away vs the Giroud’s one from the goalkickline, right?

But the stats never lie. The stats say Leao’s passing accuracy was 4th worse amongst the Milan players. Surely he cannot be the MOTM as stats say almost half of his passes were off target? Stats, stats, stats…

      1. No, stats never lie, shot on target means they had same chance of scoring than Milan, whether it was from 20 meters or a simple sitter.

        1. A striker is open in front of the open net and someone passes the ball to him. The striker tries to kick the ball in but misses the ball. According to your “shots on target”-stat it wasn’t a scoring chance.

Yeah. Stats really says everything about the game. Especially the “shots on target”. 🙂

  2. 2nd poor performance in a row for Pulisic, he also lost a great chance in order to redeem himself and bad game for Chucwueze too (he had some good movement but lost the ball in several occasions and he also lost 2 good chances). Pobega should never start a game again, I guess his is alright for sub but for a starter hell no. It’s really sad that we have 3 midfielder injured. Giroud also seemed to struggle but he is 36 years old it’s natural, maybe it’s time to play Okafor more often as a starter. On the good side now Musah really made me forget RLC, he was everywhere. This man will grow a lot in years to come. I also disagree with Theos rating, he had a good performance, solid in defense and always dangerous upfront. Overall I can’t say we played bad, but yet again we are missing goals. 2 difficult games are coming, hope for the best, FORZA MILAN!!!

  3. This is very difficult group for Milan.

Dortmund, Newcastle both strong team with much more revenue through last 15 years, and they pay more salaries to their players.

Milan missed some chances but that is normal against big club.

Unfortunately everything will be decided against PSG because Newcastle will probably take at least 3 points against Dortmund.

First 2 points are very good if we manage to keep drawing against PSG and somehow avoid loss.

Now most important game is Genoa. This draw against Dortmund should be last push for our great team to win next so important game. After which some players will get rest.

After Genoa we have so many strong teams against our player must start scoring: Napoli, Juventus, Psg. So just strong and positive.
