GdS: Milan open talks over venue for U23 team but Inter are an obstacle

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan remain hopeful of registering an Under 23 side in Serie C ahead of next season and they have opened talks over where they might play home games, a report claims.

According to this morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below), the second team project remains alive for the Milan leadership in view of the 2024-25 season, even if time is ticking by.

Milan have contacted Pro Sesto to evaluate the availability of using the Stadio Ernesto Breda, which could become the home field for the possible ‘B team’. However, there is an obstacle involved.

Pro Sesto currently have an agreement with Inter, who since the beginning of the season have had their women’s team playing at the Breda, so in short it remains too early to say the green light would come.

Milan have yet to make a final decision on having a second team, thus following the lead of Juventus and Atalanta. Even if they did firmly decide to push for it, it needs a team to fail to register for Serie C to create a spot.

Milan are behind Inter in the hierarchy of clubs that can apply for an U23 side, but the Nerazzurri do not seem interested in registering one at the moment.

The final decision will be up to Gerry Cardinale, considering that a second team costs money (€7-10m per season) but is an opportunity for growth for many players who are currently in Ignazio Abate’s Primavera.

We wrote a feature recently which examined some of the obvious benefits regarding the move, such as being able to micro-manage the development of the most talented players.

  1. 7-10 millions are nothing compared with benefits. We must think in perspective. Second team it’s a must especially if we want to grow italian players which have inflated prices. Or we can develop more our players from academy and use them in exchange plus cash with other Seria A clubs in transfers. We know Serie A clubs ask for such a big fees
