GdS: Milan’s plans for the defence begin to take shape – the core, renewals and targets

By Oliver Fisher -

The management are looking to ensure that each department of the AC Milan squad is complete and competitive heading into the new season.

La Gazzetta dello Sport takes stock of the situation regarding the rearguard, confirming that Mike Maignan has been signed as Gianluigi Donnarumma’s replacement and Alessandro Plizzari will return from his loan at Reggina to take the spot of Antonio Donnarumma as the third choice goalkeeper.

Moving on to the defence, Fikayo Tomori’s permanent signing from Chelsea for €28m will soon be made official in what is described as a ‘laborious and expensive, but necessary’ operation. Now the issue of Alessio Romagnoli’s renewal must be settled, because if the captain were to stay there would be three high-level centre-back options when including Simon Kjaer and Tomori.

Regarding the full-backs, Barcelona’s Junior Firpo is targeted as a deputy to Theo Hernandez, while to keep Diogo Dalot will need a complicated tug-of-war with Manchester United which is why Alvaro Odriozola of Real Madrid is also being followed.
