GdS: Musah challenging Krunic for midfield start against PSG

By Euan Burns -

There is a chance that Yunus Musah will oust Rade Krunic from his position at the base of the AC Milan midfield for the match against Paris Saint-Germain tomorrow night.

As has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pioli is looking to come up with a system that can keep Milan in the Champions League as anything less than a win tomorrow would make it near-impossible to progress from the group.

One of the ways in which he may change the team is to play American midfielder Musah in the centre of the midfield three, which would see Rade Krunic have to drop out of the side.

It would almost certainly be Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tijjani Reijnders who complete the midfield trio in that instance.

Milan’s form has led to a lot of panic but there is no suggestion that a change of shape is on the way, just a tweaking of personnel.

    1. Adli has good potential but he is not a good defensive midfielder.
      He is more of an attacking midfielder (he played as such in Bordeaux), or pehaps can work as a deep-lying playmaker provided there are defensive minded midfielders in front of him.
      I do like the boy, but he is one of the main culprits in our last defeat (his tackle caused the penalty) and was also horrible against PSG.
      Now with that said, Musah as a DM is a bit of a gamble. The kid is offensive minded and never played as a DM, and to try that in a must-win game against PSG can cause problems.
      I hate to admit it, but we’re stuck with Krunic until Bennacer is healed.

      1. Against psg maybe you didn’t watch that game, and talking about penalty maybe you are new to football, let me tell you apart from tijjani adli is more than all of our current midfielders

        1. he is not. Atm our best midfielder is Ruben. He makes things happen. Overall our best midfielder is Bennacer. He is a class above the rest.

        2. I did watch both games and I’m not new to football thank you !
          He is still defensively lacking. Third goal against psg was his fault, and so is the goal against Udinese, everyone saw that, maybe you watched another game.
          Also Bennacer is better than him, RLC is also better, and Musah is adapting very quickly. He is good but people have to stop acting like he is the next Pirlo.
          Like I said, he is good, but he is not being used properly.

          1. Musah is going to be somewhere in between Kessie and Bennacer. He has already been impressive and he is only 20, he’s gone from a mid-table Spanish club to a club playing v. PSG in the CL, and until a few weeks ago challenging for the Serie A title. I think he *may* end up being one of our best signings of the last couple of seasons.

        3. Musah has played defensive mid for the USMNT, as I keep saying. That’s not his preferred role, but if the coach tells him to stay back on defense and defend, he will defend. If the coach tells him to shut down so and so (i.e., Mbappe), he has the speed, power, and technical ability to do just that.
          The problem in the last match was Mbappe scored early on in the match going one on one against Tomori. Clearly, Tomori can’t handle Mbappe one on one.
          Nobody else in the Milan midfield has the sheer physical skills to take on this role of just shutting down one or two of PSG’s top offensive threats. Krunic? You’ve got to be kidding. Surely even Pioli has figured this out by now. Adli is simply not in the same class as somebody like Mbappe or most of the PSG players.
          Musah may not be a pure, dedicated, defensive midfielder, but he has the skills to take out some of the top offensive threats in the world. He did this in the 2022 World Cup match against England, shutting down Jude Bellingham

          1. Very few can shut down Mbappe, but he’ll run rings around Adli (or Krunic) with a margarita in one hand. PSG’s entire front line could run rings around them.

  1. So far Musa has been our best mid. I dont see why he shouldnt start. Rejndeers should have been benched a couple of games ago. And Krunic is same as always, average.

  2. Musah is not a 6. Neither is Krunic for that matter. We don’t have a 6 altogether. So anything with a 3 mid setup is probably gonna fail against PSG. Or a high press like last game – also a fail.

    SO 3-5-2. Sit tight and counter. Or don’t, and lose and drop out of Europe. And seal Pioli’s fate. I’m good with that also.

    1. I know people love to pigeon hole players (because it means even bigger squads and even more transfers) but players are actually capable of playing in more than position.

      There’s no such thing as 6. It’s more complicated than that.

      When Krunic plays well (and he has played well at times including in our run in last season’s Champions League where he started all 4 games v Tottenham and Napoli) it means the team is playing well.

      He’s the measure of everything.

      And nearly every top team has a Krunic. A player that makes no sense but somehow works.

      If he’s playing well it means we’re controlling the game, it means that other players who are more creative are being creative, it means the opposing team aren’t getting through.

      That was our first 45 mins against Napoli. Our best 45 minutes of the season. Possibly since January.

      If we win against PSG it will because Krunic and the rest are playing like world beaters. But THAT magic formula is the hardest thing to harness. And THAT is why it’s more complicated than No 6s and No 8s,

  3. Musah is not a 6. Neither is Krunic for that matter. We don’t have a 6 altogether. So anything with a 3 mid setup is probably gonna fail against PSG. Or a high press like last game – also a fail.

  4. My dead grand mother is better then Krunić…..But the Master Pioli,who have lost almost everything with that Clown in the last 2 months think he is midfield hero!The game itself looks like 5.-th Argentinien league game…..awfull!!!!With team like this ACM should fly over the field…with Krunić —- broken car with pulled hand brake….DESASTER!If he starts ACM will not score a goal,or have a shot on goal for the whole play time!It is no wonder ACM have score no goal in CL up to now……SELL HIM,SEND HIM AWAY,DO SOMETHING!!!Damn…

  5. Could then Krunic bashers please explain to me how Milan somehow managed to reach the semi-finals of last season with Krunic starting every knock game?

    The semi-finals whilst fan favourites were:
    – competing for 16th in La Liga in the case of Musah;
    – not in the Champions League squad in the case of Adli;
    – challenging for 12th place in the Premier League and the Quarter Finals of the Champions League in the case of Loftus-Cheek;
    – competing for 4th in the Eredivisie and the UEFA Europa Conference League in the case of Reijnders.

    Krunic actually achieved far more last season than any of our new, hero worshiped signings.

    So surely it is entirely logical to go with a player who has actually performed at this level then one of the endless might have beens?

    1. Since you talk about that semi-final so much, can you perhaps give us your opinion on those two games in the semi-final ?
      Like, why do you think we didn’t reach the final, what went wrong ? since we were so “amazing” in the previous games ?
      Also undermining new players because they played in bad teams before is, excuse me for saying it, a cheap argument.
