GdS: The numbers behind Milan’s ever-worsening injury crisis

By Oliver Fisher -

While AC Milan got the job done in convincing fashion against Monza at San Siro yesterday, there was a bit of a sour note as two more injuries were added to the list.

The first came in the 20th minute when Tommaso Pobega pulled up with what appeared to be a hip problem, and then in the second half Noah Okafor scored a goal in his 10-minute cameo before being forced off with a thigh issue.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) speaks this morning about Milan’s ridiculous injury record, starting with the fact that there have been 29 different injuries this season so far. What is more concerning is that 20 of them have been muscle issues, while nine were non-muscular.

There are only eight players in the squad who have not suffered an injury so far in 2023-24, which means that the other 20 have. Moreover, there are eight players currently out with problems which reduces the depth available to Stefano Pioli in each department.

  1. The eight players would be:-
Nava, Tomori, Reijnders, Mirante, Giroud, Florenzi. Adli and Romero
This sick man. We are 1 injury to Tomori away from collapsing.

    1. The less players we have fit, the less rotation we can make, the higher the chance of injuries for the remaining fit players.

Tomori might be out also for other reasons (red cards or after 4 yellow cards). The one that really worries me is Giroud, hopefully Jovic keeps growing more…

The fault lies with management for buying injury-prone players, but *especially* with Pioli’s physio team for not having a clue on how to adjust trainings to minimize the risk of injury. Some heads should roll…

This year’s Serie A title is gone, we’ll definitely make top 5 in Serie A (looks like next year Italy will have 5 teams in CL since it’s top of the rankings) and we’ll focus more energy in EL.
As it’s said in these cases … “all falls within the acceptable values…”

  2. 20 out of 28 have already been injured and the season hasn’t even reached halfway. That is INSANE. How about buying another 10 players in January to get through the rest of the season?
