GdS: One hurdle remains as Milan and Inter target opening date for new stadium

By Oliver Fisher -

There is one remaining hurdle for AC Milan and Inter to overcome before the new stadium project can officially get underway, a report claims.

Yesterday the two clubs released photos of the multifunctional district designed by Populous and Manica-Sportium as part of the project, including what would be constructed around the new stadium and what the current structure would turn into.

According to what is being reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday (via MilanLive), the conversion of the existing Meazza stadium can only be completed by around 2028.

Inter and Milan hope to inaugurate the new stadium much earlier in 2024, while the Council continue to make all the necessary assessments before they can give the green light to begin work, with the final ok needed from them.

The last obstacle to the agreement is that concerning the volume of what they will be able to construct on. Inter and Milan already have 90 thousand square meters of commercial space, they would like to double but they know that they will have to compromise, with a solution expected in the coming weeks.

By the summer, it will also be chosen which of the two studios –Italian firm Manica or American giants Populous – will be awarded the project.
