GdS: Openda scores again and his price rises – Milan face competition to sign him

By Oliver Fisher -

Lois Openda scored again last night for RC Lens against Ajaccio and now his asking price is rising amid interest from AC Milan, a report claims.

As reported by today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, RC Lens secured qualification for the next edition of the Champions League and Openda made it 3-0 from a penalty. In doing so, he equaled Roger Boli’s record for Lens’ top scorer in a single top flight season with 20 goals.

That record had stood for 29 years, and he celebrated with the trademark airplane to pay homage to him. An interesting summer awaits for Openda, whose performances and goals have attracted the interest of Milan.

It’s not only his numbers that impress, though. The 23-year-old moves a lot and floats on the offside line, between two centre-backs who ‘could use a couple of anti-anxiety pills’.

Openda tries to make contact with the defender, then tries to move away a metre and beat them with a run in behind, or attacking the goal to take advantage of a through ball, a cross or any feed from his team-mates.

Borussia Dortmund are also interested though and have asked to be kept informed, just as Atletico Madrid, which is not positive news for Milan’s hopes of getting what they would consider to be a bargain deal.

Lens’ request was already at €30-35m, and with the level of competition emerging the Rossoneri could struggle to bring Openda to Milanello, given they still do not want to pay huge transfer fees.

      1. Yes they are the same height, but the difference is Lautaro plays in a 2 man front paired up with a much taller striker.
If Milan stays with the same system and 1 striker in the middle, Openda height will come into question

        1. Lens use 3-4-3 formation, the 3 at front is like lwf rwf cf for me, Lens start each attack out wide and immediately look for the through ball, They are always looking to penetrate the opposition’s defence with passes into dangerous areas.
Pioli system is not much different when they attack, use Leao in left wing, Messias or Saladmaker at right wing and Giroud for the target man
Or to be more precise look at Jonathan David at Lille, same formation as Milan 4-2-3-1 same height as Lautaro.
The main thing is how ur midfield feed ur striker

          1. This is why I say Elye Wahi as a striker should be the ideal logical target. Firstly we must understand how he is played and Montpellier play a 4-2-3-1 as him as the lead striker. We also need to understand the context of the way he plays being a tall yet fast, dribble-capable striker. Therefore he ticks all the boxes for both fitting into the criteria of piolis tactics yet also being a modern striker who can maximise many different situations

  1. The player scores goals… There is real interest from more clubs… His club is going to the Champions League next year… And the price just keeps going up! What does this mean for Milan? There’s no way we’re going to see him on the Pioli team next season !

    1. Agreed Kelechi I’d like to see either Openda or Wahi, both young, decent records and quick. We lack pace up front as an option.

With Rebic and Origi leaving (let’s hope some Turkish team actually buys him) we have room for 2 forwards. One of the youngsters from Ligue 1 for say 30mn, then Firminho on a free would give us a well rounded forward line, different types of no.9 and differing experience.

Its not amazing I know, but is realistic given our other pressing issues in the squad (eg RW , no. 10 etc)

  2. You lost me at 30-35M and competition from Dortmund and Aleti Madrid lol. Who is next on the list???? LOLOLOLO. Fkn Redbird will not spend that much and compete with those teams – and those teams will likely pay him much more in salary than we will offer (#WageCap). NEXT
