GdS: Plethora of choices in attack could see Pioli try a 4-3-3 or 3-4-1-2

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli is already thinking about the variations in formation that he could field with the players at his disposal, a report claims.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) write how Pioli has many solutions up front – as he himself has admitted – with three attacking midfielders to choose from in Brahim Diaz, Yacine Adli and the big summer arrival of Charles De Ketelaere.

Therefore, the paper expect that Pioli will slowly introduce new tactical choices to ensure that his team remain unpredictable, perhaps even starting from the game against Bologna at San Siro on Saturday night.

If De Ketelaere starts from the first minute it is likely that he will be fielded as an attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1, but the characteristics of him and those of his team-mates could lead Pioli over time to use a 4-3-3 or even potentially 3-4-1-2.

After struggling for quite a lot of his tenure with not having many options for the attacking roles due to injuries and a lack of depth, he is now spoiled for choice.

  1. even if in our current formation we make one change iin the attack a good one then we can score a lot goals suppose we change diaz messias stays there we can still be insane trust me i hope pioli makes a good choice in the line up

    1. I agree Diaz is the weakest link. At least Messias attempts to get the ball into the box. Diaz just dribbles straight into the defense.

  2. 3-4-1-2 is always been a good fit for Milan these 2 seasons. With the explosive Theo and abundant selection of RWB (as we had Conti before, we still have Florenzi / Saele), Calabria is a good fit for Right Centre Back (and we shouldn’t sell Romagnoli tbh as i thought he would be good in 3CB role).

we would be short of CB players in this formation but my selection would be:
    Maignan – Saele – Cala,Kalulu,Tomori – Theo – Benna, Tonali – CDK – Leao/Rebic, Giroud

I do wonder why the coach never try 3-4-1-2 before.

    1. I like your formation very much ,and yes Oliver Giroud is a must start ..this formation you have suggested I believe would result in goals .

    2. That’s more of a 5-2-1-2, but yeah. I would play Calabria as the RWB, and bring in Kjaer. So the back 3 left to right would be Tomori-Kjaer-Kalulu. So you have the tallest most experienced CB in the middle and the two quick guys flanking him. Here’s an even crazier idea: 5-2-2-1 (or 3-4-2-1 if you will). LWB-Theo, LCB-Tomori, CB-Kjaer, RCB-Kalulu, RWB-Calabria, DMC-Tonali, DMC-Bennacer, AMC-CDK, AMC-Adli, ST-Grioud. Sell Leao.

  3. Biggest problem is leao too individual he only pass the ball when he feels like it and there is no collectivities Milan too inconsistent they do have a good team they just need more discipline

  4. Tomori is more comfortable in the middle and Kjaer can play on the left. Kalulu is best on the right; so if we played 3 in the back and we did a 3-4-2-1, this is how I would do it:
    Giroud/Rebic/Origi (lone striker)
    Leao …………….. CDK
    Theo-Tonali-Bennacer-(Florenzi/Cala)
    …Kjaer …. Tomori …. Kalulu
    ………Maignan

    1. Dechamps with French Nat’l team has Theo up on a 3-4-2-1, leads in assists…..guy is a stud, Leao when marked by two has to find the open man cutting to the box, Pioli got him to do it in second half of season last year and as expected his goal tally also rose. In Pioli I trust. Forza

  5. We have great management for AC MILAN..POLI makes his choices ..We have a great squad at our disposal …I do have one thing to say and that is to use
Oliver Giroud ,his reading of the game is amazing ,great technical ability and his sheer strength and determination second to none ..He will score goals make no mistake about that ..I always believe that when he starts we will lose very few games .
So it’s AC Milan for me to challenge for honours again this season .Love this team and management..
