GdS: Probable XIs for Salzburg vs. Milan – only one change from derby win

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli is not expected to make many changes to the starting line-up for the game against Red Bull Salzburg compared to the team which beat Inter in the derby.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport this morning, it should be the usual defensive department consisting of Mike Maignan in goal with Davide Calabria, Pierre Kalulu, Fikayo Tomori and Theo Hernandez ahead of him.

Sandro Tonali and Ismael Bennacer are expected in the double pivot again with Charles De Ketelaere ahead of them as the central attacking midfielder.

Alexis Saelemaekers should get the nod over Junior Messias on the right with Rafael Leao on the left flank and Olivier Giroud up front to complete the attack.

Probable Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Calabria, Kalulu, Tomori, Theo Hernandez; Bennacer, Tonali; Saelemaekers, De Ketelaere, Leao; Giroud.

Probable Salzburg XI (4-3-1-2): Kohn; Dedic, Solet, Wober, Ulmer; Capldo, Seiwald, Kjaergaard; Kameri; Okafor, Fernando.

  1. I have every confidence in the team selected ,,it’s made so much more encouraging with that man Olivier Giroud up front …yes I would like salemakers to start .I think it’s going to be a tough match ,but I believe we will win …We have a very good side and as well as win the scuddeto again this season
Would be amazing ,and yes of course possible..I would like us to have a good run in the champions league.

  2. The 2 substitutions I want to see the most in the 2nd half would be:
    1. Sit Saelemakers, insert Dest at RW.
    2. Sit Calabria, move Kalulu to RB and insert Kjaer as the left CB with Tomori as the right CB (where Tomori played his absolute best football last year with either Kjaer or Romagnoli — now with Kalulu as the right CB, Tomori has not been as good anymore as the left CB).

It would make our back 4 much better and faster and smarter defensively; and also Kalulu with Dest on the right side would actually almost be at least pretty close to the pace we have on the left with Leao/Theo — teams would have to respect that right side and not focus so much on stopping Leao/Theo. We’d be MUCH more dangerous offensively from both sides.
