GdS: Set pieces become a problem for Milan, just like last season – the numbers

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan’s inconsistent form has led to a number of issues being highlighted and one of them is the fact that the Rossoneri are conceding from too many set pieces.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport writes, Stefano Pioli’s team have struggled to maintain any form since the Champions League group stage kicked in and part of that is the fact that they are struggling to defend set pieces effectively.

Pioli actually said after the 2-2 draw against Lecce on Saturday to DAZN: “We conceded a goal from a corner kick identical to the one on Tuesday against PSG. These are errors that we are paying a high price for. I am absolutely not satisfied.”

This season, Milan conceded from a set piece against Lecce with Nicola Sansone scoring, and Luvumbo scored for Cagliari from a set piece. In the Champions League, Randal Kolo Muani and Milan Skriniar have scored from set-pieces. There is also Giacomo Raspadori’s free-kick for Napoli and Robert Pereyra’s penalty for Udinese but they are not a structural problem.

In the 2022/23 season, Milan conceded 16 of their 43 goals from set pieces which is very high for a top side.

It is a part of the game that Pioli and his team clearly need to work on if they are to recover their Serie A title challenge.

  1. Another sign of a poorly coached team. It’s been going on under Pioli the entire time. Not to mention that Milan are terrible at taking set pieces as well.

  2. Yes, poor coaching.
Napoli have realised that they have a problem and taken appropriate steps before it is too late.
I fear it will be too late for this season by the time we decide to ‘put out the trash’
