GdS: Walker added Champions League bonus in Milan contract – the background

Kyle Walker was announced by AC Milan on Friday evening and this morning, an interesting background was told by Gazzetta dello Sport. Put shortly, the right-back has shown high ambitions with the bonuses in his contract.

As per the pink newspaper this morning (see photo below), in contract negotiations with Milan, Walker asked for a bonus in the event of an eighth Champions League. He wasn’t referring to qualifying for the knockout phase, as in finishing in the top eight, but rather clinching the Rossoneri’s eighth UCL.

Milan’s season has been far from perfect, between poor performances and fan protests, but Walker has made it clear that his ambitions are high. As the newspaper continues, the world needs to be understood through the details sometimes and the bonus added says a lot.

Walker’s first game will be the derby against Inter, seeing as he isn’t on the Champions League squad list and thus cannot feature against Dinamo Zagreb next week. The formula of the transfer, as has been confirmed, is a dry loan with an option to buy at €5m.

The Englishman will earn €4.5m per season and will thus be one of the best-paid players in Milan’s squad. Hopefully, he will live up to the Rossoneri’s expectations.

  1. Normally signing old players is not wise but this one is one of those exceptions as the rewards outweigh the risks. He has ton of experience and winning mentality working and learning from Pep. Look at what Kompany is doing at Bayern or Arteta or Maresca at Arsenal & Chelsea. They all came from Manc working under Pep. I expect big things from him in the dressing room as Morata hasn’t lived up to expectations.

On the field, he is still very solid, sure he is no longer in his prime but he is still quick and much better than both Calabria & Emerson adding quality right away. He can also operate in back 3. Likes of Thiaw & Pavlovic can also learn from him. I dont see much downside. Good signing.

    1. “I dont see much downside. Good signing.”

Especially considering it’s a free loan so zero risk too. What’s there not to like?
