GdS: Why Milan have ‘total confidence’ in Fonseca and will remain patient

The defeat before the break against Fiorentina may have reopened a crisis at AC Milan in the eyes of the media, but internally there are no doubts regarding Paulo Fonseca.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that the loss in Florence has not changed the scenario and this week of break has not led to reflections: Fonseca continues to enjoy the full confidence from the club’ s hierarchy.

There is the conviction to move forward with the Portuguese coach who in the first part of the season has alternated positive results with disappointing performances. Milan are not yet the team that Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Giorgio Furlani and Geoffrey Moncada had in mind, but they believe in their choice.

They are convinced that the Portuguese is the right man for the project and that he only needs a little more time for his Milan to find the consistency of performance necessary not only to achieve the minimum objective (fourth place and qualification for the next Champions League), but also to fight for the Scudetto.

According to the directors, the season is still long and there is plenty of time to fix things, provided that the last two defeats against Bayer Leverkusen and Fiorentina have taught Theo Hernandez and his team-mates something in terms of attitude.

Despite the incidents that ended up resulting in the loss at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, the management believe that the performance from the team was actually positive and should have led to three points but for failing to convert two penalties and Fikayo Tomori’s error.

The belief is that with forwards of the caliber of Rafael Leao, Alvaro Morata, Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic the scoring frequency will increase and cover some defensive flaws that for the moment have not yet been eliminated.

More work on the pitch and more concentration from everyone will be needed, while Gerry Cardinale and his men knew that focusing on Fonseca and his idea of proactive football would require a change in the squad construction which was only partially completed in the summer.

It was taken into account that there would be some difficulty in the first matches, even if the hope was that after the big win in the derby there would not be the slowdown of the last two defeats. Fonseca was and is considered the right man for Milan.

  1. That should be concerning that the management remains blind to the situation but it’s just a habit at this point. There is still no positive sign two months after the beginning of the season but “no panic”. Fans should stop buying tickets for home games.

    1. I’m losing patience with Fonseca, but I’m not there every day to watch the team train or hear what the players say about the new coach. Only time will tell. When the management has been so quiet about many things, I highly doubt this is credible news lol

    2. When it works we look really to be fair, but that is really me scraping the “positive signs” barrel.

The derby and the second half against Leverkusen seem to have bought him time, but we certainly weren’t unlucky against Fio – we were second best.

Udinese look really good from what I’ve seen (they got stung by manager bounce against Roma) – I can see us getting beat. Not firing someone with 5 losses from 10 would be even harder to justify than, say, signing Emerson or letting Maldini leave on a free.

      1. Fonseca was obviously hired because he’s very affordable and is a yes man.

He doesn’t have experience at a top club. He didn’t coached world class players. His last game in UCL before Milan was in 2018. He has yet to win a game in UCL since 2018. The players don’t fit his system. The decision to hire him made absolutely no sense.

Since he’s the coach, Milan has won only three times in nine games. The players criticised him in the media and he criticised the players in the media. He’s still trying to figure a system. He isn’t developing anyone but the top players seem to regress. And some top players are in mutiny.

It was a wrong decision to hire him in the first place. The longer they wait to assess that, the biggest it will hurt the team and the club. Or we can wait and hope that Fonseca magically turns into a winner, which he never has been in his career at humble levels of play.

  2. As much as I was against signing of Fonseca, I have to admit, Fonseca is not the problem. Team is poorly built. Plus, the players’ attitude is downright destructive. No coach can do well with this $hite. Any coach, regardless of name, is gonna need time to bring these primadonna manchildren back in line first, then we can start expecting performances.

  3. Hang on…he was one result away from oblivion three weeks ago.

Someone somewhere might be in the belief that he is doing enough to buy time, but he hasn’t gone from “one wrong move and you’re toast” to “total confidence” – so which is it?

  4. Because he’s cheap, won’t interfere with management and their lousy acquisitions and because we are ran by a bunch of narcissistic egomaniacs who won’t admit their mistake and on top have no clue of how to manage a football club? No? Darn…

  5. JAJAJAJJA JAJAJAJA JAJAJAJJA JAJAJAJA JAJAJAJJA SE ACABÓ!!!! LA TEMPORADA!!!! GRACIAS A LOS DIRECTIVOS DEL AC MILAN 2015 /16 GAME OVER!!! 👍🏻🇺🇲🇵🇹🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤬
