Massimiliano Allegri has regularly defended the striker, given that he has regularly contributed more than goals for the team. However, with nine Serie A games this season without a goal, questions are being asked.
It is impossible not to, too. His last goals in the league came in May, and five months later, everyone is left waiting. This season, he has played 627 minutes, as Gazzetta dello Sport reports, in partnership with Sofascore and Opta.
However, his goalscoring output matches other struggling players. Ibrahim Maza of Bayer Leverkusen, Thijs Dallinga (Bologna), Evan Ferguson (Roma), and Martin Satriano have each played less than half of his minutes.
Yet, he sits alongside them in terms of goals scored. In fact, he sits only on par with Maza for output, given that the others have at least assisted. Gimenez leads for xG comfortably at 2.83, but he has not scored.
Furthermore, as the graphic shows, he has missed more big chances (7) than the others on the list combined (4). An unfortunate reality is facing everyone currently.

He has about 2 months to bag a few goals, or i could see him getting sold. I get that he isnt helped by the constant rotating door of guys next to him, and leao is probably the absolute worst person to be paired up top with as a striking partnership, but he still has had chances and squandered them. He needs to knuckle down and prove he deserves to stay these next 60 days

Gimenez may benefit from competition for starting spot and Nkunku ain’t it. I don’t know what quality they can bring in January but I feel like the summer might be the end of the road for Santi.
Well overall yes. To be fair, his first 6 months were actually good from a per 90 perspective. He was among the top 5 per 90m in the league earlier this year. Then this season he hasn’t done much, which has dragged down his numbers ALOT. I think his confidence got shot by the club itself. They didn’t back him when he did well, much less when he’s not doing well

Release of Jovic was bizarre at the time, and worse in hindsight.
By far the worst forward we got in 2000’s. I still can’t believe they paid 30+ millions for him and let go Jovic who came for free and scored quite regularly when he was not injured. If Jovic was given 627 minutes to play in only 9 games he would have scored at least 7 goals and provided 3 assists. Minimum.
