Giornale: Tonali needs time to understand the mechanisms, his position and improve his pace

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan fans must be patient with Sandro Tonali, a report claims, as he is starting from a base that is a bit further back than most of the other squad members.

Tonali is for the moment an alternative to the immovable pairing of Bennacer and Kessie, but as he grows and develops he could begin to challenge one or both.

Obviously the double pivot has been one of the strengths of Milan’s run of 20 games without defeat, yet with a compact schedule Tonali will get his chance.

As Friday’s edition of Il Giornale (via MilanNews) notes, in yesterday’s match against Celtic it seemed that Tonali occasionally found himself in difficulty.

However, it must be noted that the 20-year-old has not had the easiest of preseason preparations as he had a troubled physical recovery and he is learning a new role on the pitch.

As a result, he will need time to understand the mechanisms, his position and improve his pace.

I am worried about Sandro Tonali. This is not because of his apparent lack of match fitness. My concern about Italy’s most elegant youngster is that he is going to be undervalued in an age when safety first midfield combativity is in demand at every club in Europe.

Playing alongside Kessie and Bennacer and in between two other over-used staples of the modern game, the wing-backs, Tonali is surely never going to realise his full potential. In this role, his duties will be overly defensive and his primary attacking contribution will be those long Pirloesque chips he is already known for.

Surely, a player with such rare technical ability should be in and around the opposition penalty area, finding angled passes, shifting the balance of play in an instant, hitting unstoppable shots from 30 yards?

Just because he is being called ‘the new Pirlo’, it doesn’t mean he has to fill the same regista role.

Tonali should be Milan’s trequartista and relegate the consistently disappointing Çalhanoğlu to the dustbin.
