Giroud reveals what former Milan team-mates have told him about Fonseca

After leaving AC Milan in the summer, Olivier Giroud did not experience Paulo Fonseca’s management. However, he has been told what the Portuguese coach is like by his former teammates.

Giroud’s departure looked likely in the early parts of 2024, and when the French forward eventually was confirmed to be leaving Milan it did not come as a shock. Milan could not offer the minutes to the striker that he felt he could provide, and there were no hard feelings when it was decided that a split was best.

Nevertheless, he has still kept in contact with his former teammates, watching from afar, and he spoke of how the squad are doing in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The new formula gives you time to rise. Milan must be ambitious: aiming for the Champions League is a must. Because the squad is deep and the attack is great, as I said.

“In Europe, those who have quality in attack win. Fonseca will have to find balance but now he can work with serenity. And I know that the boys are happy with the training sessions: the group follows him. I think this is the right year to make a good run in the Champions League.”

Giroud has been keeping a keen eye on the Rossoneri, and after the Derby della Madonnina victory, he took to Instagram to post a message of support. Even if he has moved on, he still has a place for the Rossoneri in his heart, and the feeling is mutual.

  1. If we continue 442 we likely need:
    * a S of the same profile as Tammy for backup and rotation. I hope we can see Ok4 grow here instead.
    * An all action SS in the mold of Morata. I hope RLC and Moving can cover this and grow into it instead.
    * A DM to cover for Fof. While I realize Benny is coming back in Jan I don’t trust him to be in shape after his last big layoff
    * A RB – given we will move on from Calabria no matter what, I don’t seem Emerson being the guy. Hmwither makes a serviceable deputy.
*A LB – We need a defender more than a bomber like Theo to be his deputy. We have so much offensive fire power. Someone who simply locks down the left and is never mentioned.

So I do think there are opportunities to improve, but only RB appears to be a need at this time.

We will know more at the break.

        1. CDK jumped to mind for me too but in the realm of now, RLC is the guy.

His 10 goals last season were more as SS than CAM. He can move like Morata and is skilled with the ball. So he seems cut from the same mold. Question is can he do it and does he want to?

I’d rather the money be focused on RB and LB based on what I’m seeing at this time. I’m sure that will evolve over the next 6 games as rotation becomes more common

      1. I defn see what you are saying. Esp after @Rohits article with the average posn.

That said I think there is a nuance that is deeper than setup and adaptation to ball control and position.

This is why I think an explicit agreement with RLC to become deputy to Morata (for all that he is not a true 10) makes sense.

I’d say the same about Ok4 and Tammy, though I think Ok4 needs confid nice and more regular play.

I’d also like to see more of Jovic now that we are 75% of the way to a two striker system.

The system seems to revolve around an all action SS who can drop deep and frustrate a defense by showing up in the box unexpectedly.

To me we have players who show characters but not yet quality (Ok4, RLC and Chuk). Tho admittedly we’ve only had two games in said system so l am on the consistency band wagon too at this time.

I’m looking forward to seeing how this translates to UCL tomorrow for sure!
