In an interview with Joe.co.uk (see video below), AC Milan legend Ruud Gullit spoke about the Ballon d’Or and why defenders will continue to be overlooked in the future.
During the 2019 edition, Leo Messi, Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo went head-to-head for the award. The Argentine eventually came out on top, although many argued that the defender should have won it.
In the interview, Gullit shared his thoughts on the matter, also referring back to a comment of Arrigo Sacchi on why the Liverpool man didn’t win. ‘If Baresi didn’t win it, why should he?’.
