Heffernan reacts after leaving Milan and joining Newcastle United: “It’s surreal”

By Oliver Fisher -

Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of defender Cathal Heffernan from AC Milan, and the player has revealed why he made the move.

Heffernan joined Milan in the winter of 2022 on an initial loan deal after quite the saga in which the operation was off and on at various points. However, it emerged over the last few weeks that he would be heading for the north of England.

Now, Newcastle United have announced the signing of Heffernan on their official website.  The 18-year-old centre-back – who has played for Republic of Ireland from U15 to U18 level – joins them on a permanent deal.

Heffernan featured in two preseason friendlies for Newcastle’s U21 side whilst on trial last month and they have decided to give him a deal.

“It’s surreal to join such a big club like Newcastle. It’s definitely a club that is on the rise and with a lot of history. During the last week, I’ve been so excited to get started and I’m now looking forward to a big season ahead,” he said.

“The first thing I noticed when I arrived on trial was the lads were really welcoming and I just want to carry that on into the season, getting to know them more. The people of Newcastle are also really nice, too.

“I have become a much better defender during my time at AC Milan and I learnt so many things to improve my game during my two seasons in Italy which should stand me in good stead for the future.

“The goal, when playing Academy football, is to try and break into a first-team as quick as you can and, hopefully, I can do that at Newcastle United.”

  1. It really must be surreal to join such a big club that last won the english chamionship in 1926–27 season and never won a major european competiton, Last time they won their last championship dadaismn was at its height that is really surreal to think about.
Best of wishes to him though.

  2. “It’s surreal to join such a big club like Newcastle. It’s definitely a club that is on the rise and with a lot of history.” Who is this clown? Bro thinks Newcastle is a big club with history.

    1. They do have history bro – unfortunately it’s ancient history. They are a big club though, huge passionate support and a club on the rise. Good luck to them..

  3. What was the point of this transfer?
Is he yet another blond player forced out by the fraud Pioli joining the ranks of Hauge and CDK?

      1. Kerkez was blond too.
Pioli hates blond players. He even fell out with Kjaer.
He is probably racist towards Nordics. Maybe a blond guy stole his girlfriend?

  4. This is a good opportunity for Milan to move Krunic out given his age and get someone younger.

Mats Wieffer and Ryan Gravenberch are good options that are better than Dominguez from Bologna.

    1. at least reims had just fontaine in their team and lost a european champions cup final against real madrid from what i can recollect.

      1. Oh didn’t know they’ve played a European final. Well yeah that won’t as bad as calling New Castle such a big club after leaving Milan

          1. 😀 propably most people wouldnt know it either but i just remembered that just fontaine had played there and was pretty sure they had lost a final against madrid in the early years of competition. Just fontaine is also the world cup player who has scored the most goals in a single world cup scoring 13 goals in 6 matches so one of the alltime greats of the sport. I did like peter beardsley, les ferdinand and allan shearer though of newcastle in the 90ies.

          2. Nice. Now I’ve known abit more about Fontaine too. I can’t recall much if anything about the sport from before the mid 90s and I don’t follow much history. Fell in love with Maldini at the 94 World cup which led to following Milan and being a fan.

          3. Thats ok fontaine also predates when i was born but still interesting nevertheless. Think the first i can remember of football internationall wise is world cup 86 with maradona when i was seven years old, 1994 world cup was great as well even though it didnt pan out as hoped for italy but lots of great games across the tournament from various teams nevertheless.

  5. Only amateurs in this club!! what’s the point of doing all that scouting effort and recruitment ,and then give him cheaply like this to Newcasle ,everyone knows that their scouting department is good, so how we still make the same mistakes !!! i wish it’s not an another Kerkes gag : buying such good talent with 200 k Euros ,and then sold him for nothing (2 millions Euros ) even we knows that he can can be sold for much more in the future (Hello Bournemouth (15 millions Euros ), and on the contrary we bought that MF Balo Touré for 4.5 millions Euros ,and he liked so much his life on the city ,so that he don’t want to leave us on peace !! that MF
