Watch: The highlights from Tijjani Reijnders’ first season at Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

It was around one year ago that Tijjani Reijnders arrived at AC Milan from AZ Alkmaar, and it would be fair to say his first season was a success.

Having come from the Netherlands, Reijnders quickly established himself as a starter in the Milan midfield, one which needed to be rebuilt after the departure of Sandro Tonali to Newcastle. What quickly followed was a fixed spot in the national team, too.

He ranked among the top 10 players in Serie A for chances created from open play, passes completed in the final third of the pitch and through-balls, showing that he is an all-action midfielder for Milan.

  1. “He ranked among the top 10 players in Serie A for chances created from open play, passes completed in the final third of the pitch and through-balls.”

All of it playing as a DM. Imagine if he is played in his real position.
Yet there will be the usual suspects that will say he isn’t good, and that some inter back up Frattesi is a better player than him because he scored few garbage time goals.

Reijnders in his 1st season at Milan playing out of position 4 goals 4 assists.
Compared to other starters that play in similar role.
Bennacer never had a season with more than 5 goal contributions.
    Last year inter midfield
    Hakan 15g, 3 a. 13 of the 15 goals are from penalties.
Barella 2g, 7a, supposedly the best midfielder in the league.
    Mikhitaryan 2g,11a.
    Juve, Locatelli 1g, 6a.
    Rabiot 5g,3a
    Lobotka 0g,1a
    Anguisa 1g, 3a
Koopmeiners in his 1st season at Atalanta 4g 4a.

Reijnders was a Great signing. Hopefully he will play in his proper position next season and he will have Even better year.

    1. Nobody said he’s not good but he’s completely overhyped here. Almost 4000 minutes played worth 2 minutes of highlights, against inferior clubs.

      1. It’s a site and a platform specifically dedicated to Milan and its players, so of course, Milan players will be overhyped, overvalued, and overrated by the Milanisti. But certain people have an issue and go out of their way to downplay, and nitpick when something good is written about players signed after June 5th, 2023.

      2. “Almost 4000 minutes played worth 2 minutes of highlights, against inferior clubs.”

Well… Let’s see the similar highlight reels for the other midfielders:
        – Adli: 30 seconds
        – Bennacer: 10 seconds
        – Pobega: 3 seconds
        – Musah: 3 seconds
        – Zeroli: not enough material to get a highlight reel

Yeah. Reijnders is overhyped. And the rest of the Milan-midfield is world-class, eh? 😀 😀 😀

    2. He never played as a DM, check his heatmap from last season. Defensively it was one of all time worst seasons for goals conceded.

      1. He never played as a DM!
        Are you sure?
If he never played as a DM why are you bringing up that defensively last season was an all time worst when it comes to goal conceded in this conversation.
Was he the reason Milan was giving up goals, or the defenders being all injured and even when they were healthy they were poor,
Mike Maignan had the worst season as a Milan player.
Theo and Calabria/Florenzi were getting beaten like a drum by wingers,
Leao being lazy and not running back to help….
None of those factors played role in Milan bad defense. It was Reijnders fault even though according to you he never played as a DM.

        1. “It was Reijnders fault even though according to you he never played as a DM.”

You’re making things up in you head dude. Calm your tits. And no, he was never a DM. Go check his heatmap from last season and then talk.

    3. I agree that he doesn’t get the love he should.

I also agree with @Barts to some extent about much of it against inferior teams. But I’d like to crack that open a bit.

The same thing (absent in big games) can be said of Puli, RLC, Leao, etc with similar truth.

So I don’t think this is a matter of the individual. Rather I think it a matter of team issue.

Pioli’s class in bringing ACM thru those first two years of his tenure brought me to the team. I knew nothing about ACM then and thought it cool how he did much with little then.

But even I realized that he didn’t grow with that success last year. It was clear that players were confused on the field and Pioli was unable to adapt the system to subs like Ok4 so Giroud played far to much.

So I expect all these ACM sophomores in particular to show up much more in the big games this year.

  2. Y’all know I’ve got a soft spot for this kid. I just want to see him play a season where he doesn’t have to defend as much and can focus on attack.

    1. Heck ACM1898 I want a season where all our players know where to be and are playing their best game!

      Forza Milan!

      1. Fonseca might prove to be a genius and field our players in their preferred positions. Wouldn’t that be a novel idea? AND veto Royal…
