HITC: Newcastle United close to agreeing €41m deal for Milan defender – the details

By Oliver Fisher -

Newcastle United are closing in on striking a deal with AC Milan which will see them sign central defender Malick Thiaw, according to a report.

There has been intense speculation over the past couple of weeks regarding Thiaw’s future at Milan and Newcastle are the team that have been linked most insistently with the German.

According to HITC, the Magpies are ‘close to finalising a deal’ for Thiaw after talks were held over the weekend that brought the two clubs closer to a meeting point.

Milan are set to sign Strahinja Pavlovic from Red Bull Salzburg who, as per the report, is ‘a player that Newcastle United also liked’, and that will likely mean the green light arrives for Thiaw to leave.

There is a ‘broad agreement over personal terms now in place’ between the Premier League side and Thiaw, with the transfer fee likely to be in the £35m range, which is around €41m at the current conversion rate.

That figure would constitute a huge capital gain for Milan who signed him for €8.5m from Schalke in the summer of 2022 according to Transfermarkt. Whether the management would then move for a replacement given that Simon Kjaer has also left remains to be seen.

  1. Would be hard to find a flaw in that deal, potential to be a very good player for Newcastle but one who isn’t a guarantee, looks good on the finances. If this is the summer’s big sale then fair enough.

  2. Selling thiaw for over 40m is brilliant. I don’t know what he’s done to be valued so high because even though he had an injury he had a very bad season. Even when he did play well I never viewed him as a top defender.

    1. He mauled Kane in champions league and lewandowski with national team match.

He had very good 6months at first and weak 1year but with injuries.

There is talent that’s how Newcastle scouts working. They don’t spend very big but they are reasonably much better than big teams.

  3. For the management this was too good to pass by. They bought Thiaw for 8m selling him for 40m ,making a large Capita gain.

In the end , even if Pavlovic turns out to be great, they are selling a 22 year old with world class potential whilst keeping Tomori & Gabbia who do not have that potential.
Kalulu will probably be back to CB and Royal & Calabria right backs….we will have to wait and see but this department might need another experienced CB to marshall the defence as Tomori ain’t going to do it.

    1. Business-wise it’s a good deal. And Pavlovic is a good CB. But frankly between him and Thiaw, I think Thiaw is clearly the one with the bigger potential.
Anyway, if it goes through, it goes through.
      Just hope Pavlovic settles well.

    2. Gabbia doesn’t have potential but Thiaw does? Well… Gabbia is already on a level Thiaw will never reach. So there’s that. 🙂

      1. I like Gabbia and he played well last year but he has limitations. If Pav arrives , then Pavlovic-Thiaw will be the starters in time . If you can’t see why Newcastle would want to pay 40m for a 22 year old Thiaw that’s on you.

      2. Ya I don’t think Gabbia is on a level Thiaw will not reach. Sophomore slump is common with all young players and it’s not as if Gabbia set the world on fire and was dominant. He played well but is limited on what his ceiling is.

Thiaw has all the tools to be great. Let’s see if he puts it together. I’d rather sell Tomori and keep the potential of Thiaw – but I get the capital gain aspect of it. But a Pavlovic/Thiaw partnership could have the potential to be great. Both big and mobile with room to grow

  4. I’m say what many are thinking. Sign an experienced stop gap like Hummels on a free (ok doesn’t need to be Hummels specifically) then Scalvini as the long term target next summer assuming he recovers well from injury…

    1. Still on Scalvini? Lol. We’re about to get a left footed defender in Pavlovic and if Scalvini keeps going the way he has been Atalanta will ask for 60M for him. He’s a pipe dream, or at least an FM dream.

      1. Pavlovic was needed anyway, that’s for sure. Am happy we have a natural Left sided CB.

However with Gabbia/Pavlovic/Tomori/Kalulu we still likely to be in the market for another if Thiaw leaves.

Though you might be right Scalvini a pipe dream. I’m just thinking better to wait and see in a year and sign an experienced backup in the meantime.

  5. Yeah why not. At least it frees up space for Pavlovic who seems inevitable.

At least Thiaw is probably not first choice although no doubt he’ll turn out to be amazing!

Who knows maybe he’ll end up playing for Inter like all of our other former players.

    1. Does piatek play for inter? How about suso? Rodriguez? Bacca? Silva? Gomez? Dollar? Kessie? Paqueta? Niang? Hauge? Krunic? Quarter? Simic?

I could go on and on…. whining heir whining about how someone might play for inter someday.

  6. Gordon Stipic, the agent of the player says: “The current reporting about my client Malick Thiaw in connection with a possible transfer to Newcastle United is false and incorrect. Therefore, I will not comment on any further rumours.“

    1. And everyone keeps saying he’s got potential. Well… That’s pretty much all he’s got in addition to being the most hazardous CB Milan has had in the 2000s. I still don’t see what people see in him besides bad passes, clumsy & idiotic fouls, failing to mark the opponents, zero awareness etc. But I guess he’s still the next Nesta or something. 🙂

  7. Quite funny how fast people can judge by one bad season, where he was rusty after the injuries (late in tackles etc) but forgetting that he is actually a physical and a speedy CB. But yeah, i would accept selling him for 41mil euros, even though i see potential in him and i think Newcastle will enjoying having him. Just bad Thiaw actually don’t have any mentor (in Milan) in that position to look up to.
But what i don’t accept, if this management just going to keep on like that. Buying cheap, having the players 1-2 seasons and selling for profit and so on. I can’t keep up with that type of cycle

    1. Even before injury he was error prone, and he has terrible positioning as a defender.
He’s still young of course, but for the defense, i’d rather have a more experienced player like tomori.
And maybe now that tomori plays in the right side of the center with pavlovic on the left, he can replicate his best performance during the scudetto season.

      1. Terrible positioning, error-prone? If you just added completely unaware of what’s going on around him you would have discriped Tomori to a tee. So no I would not rather have Tomori, if one has to go it’s not Thiaw.

        1. At least we’ve seen Tomori CAN be good too with a good partner but no one has seen Thiaw play well. So there’s that… 🙂

Tomori error-prone? Thiaw is 10x worse.

    2. Agree compeletly.
1 year ago it was ” Milan has defense for the next decade” with Kalulu, Thiaw, Tomori

Now we are selling after 1 bad, injury ravaged season. Back to square one. Settle in another defender. But hey the books will look good, ffs!

Simic arrived to great fanfare as how Milan snatched the biggest talent in the Stuttgart academy. 2 years later after he has been outstanding, he is sold.
What is the point to any of this?

Shambolic management of resources and unsettling a solid squad with unnecessary transfers

      1. We still have Kalulu and Tomori, the pair that won the scudetto. Thiaw was one season wonder (2022/23 where we won nothing and finished fifth) and started 2023/24 badly even before the injury. I will not dismiss the possibility of him getting back to good shape, but 41M€ is more than worth it for him.
I do agree that it is unfortunate to have lost Simic, but don’t forget that he wanted a big salary and more playtime (which is fair if you ask me), so it’s not like he was completely pushed out.

        1. I agree with everything you say.

I just get the feeling this team will never be complete.
Once we have one department sorted we dismantle another. It’s turning into a merry-go-round

Why can’t they leave well enough alone.
All we needed was a good young striker and DM, but we get another revolution

          1. While it does seem to be turning a bit into a merry-go-round, it’s far from another revolution. So far we only acquired 2 players
I won’t say we need specifically a young striker, just a striker, and for less than 50M€, I don’t think we could have gotten much better than Morata to be frank. My issue with the Morata deal is that it didn’t seem that we wanted him for what he can give but rather that he seems to be a good opportunity financially wise. Now Fullkrug will be too much.
We still didn’t get a DM and I don’t think Fofana fits the bill.
We did get a center back, but we’ve lost 2 (Kjaer and Simic) so it does make sense, plus the coach has apparently asked for a left footed center-back so it does seem like a good target.
Now, I will never be convinced by Royal. I guess now that Florenzi is injured we can make a better case for him, and he might perhaps surprise everyone here (for the better I hope) but I just don’t see why we’re so persistent with him.
Samardzic seems to be a luxury and a bit too much for what was supposed to be slight reinforcement, but I don’t think we will get him unless we sell someone.

          2. @Giga94

            Last year CB’s

            Tomori
            Kalulu – moving to RB?
            Gabbia
            Thiaw – leaving?
            Kjaer – left
            Simic – left
            Pellegrino – left

            That’s a fair revolution

        2. People keep saying Thiaw had potential but the truth is that Simic has 100x more potential than Thiaw ever will.

We’ll end up missing Simic more than Thiaw.

  8. If this goes through, quickly replace him with Jakub Kiwior that’s if he’s still available especially given the fact he’s being chased by both Juve & Inter. Left footed, young, Serie A experience plus beating our rivals to a signing would be extra bonus. Imo perfect 👌

  9. I don’t see the world class potential that others do in Thiaw. He will be good, but great? I’m not sure about that. To be a good CB you need to be calm and composed more than any other position. Last season was his second and you’d expect to see growth in these areas of concentration, but he instead was a walking yellow card. There was more than one game where we dropped points due to his individual errors. 40m for him is a good deal and if he goes on to be a world class CB, good for him.

  10. Fellas hold your horses, it’s fake news, his agent said it’s fake news, Thaiw is the best person to pair with Pavalovic, they are both tall, and his composure would compliment Pavalovic better than Tomori.

  11. Thiaw and Tomori look confused togather because they want to do the same things, Think both are good defenders and both would do well on the right next to Pavlovic
