CM: A report from 2019 and Maldini’s call – how Milan beat PSG and Leeds to De Ketelaere

By Oliver Fisher -

It was not an easy or quick negotiation, but AC Milan hung in there until the end and finally agreed a deal for Charles De Ketelaere.

Calciomercato.com have offered some background on De Ketelaere’s now imminent move to Milan. Firstly, it was back in 2019 when his name was reported for the first time to Milan and it was at that point that his name entered the Rossoneri database, never leaving it.

The scouting work was precise and detailed: ‘Great technique, excellent physicality and adaptable player’ was read in the observers’ reports. He was always one of the top names in the lists of players in the sights and they studied him closely over the next three years before decided this summer was the one to move.

There were obstacles to overcome though such as the fact that his potential and ability attracted the interest of other clubs who subsequently provided competition. Leeds United put a higher offer on the table, and PSG came forward too, but a call from Paolo Maldini was enough to convince De Ketelaere so much so that he renounced a portion of his salary in order to come to Milan.

Milan have been after the 21-year-old since he was a teenager and three years since the first report, the paths of the Rossoneri and the Belgian are finally about to converge.
