How AC Milan can qualify for the Champions League knockouts – all the combinations

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have two games left in the Champions League group stages to book their place in the knockout stages, but what must they do to qualify?

Milan know that the game against Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia tomorrow night is pretty much a must-win after the two defeats against Chelsea. By winning both of their remaining games, Milan would be certain of qualification regardless of any other results, but of course there are more combinations at play.

➤ In the event of a victory against Dinamo and a draw against Salzburg, Milan would qualify if Salzburg lost to Chelsea tomorrow night. With a draw between Salzburg and Chelsea the overall goal difference would come into play.

➤ In the event of a win against Salzburg and a draw against Dinamo, Milan qualify if Chelsea lose both of their games or if Salzburg do not beat Chelsea.

➤ If Milan lose to Dinamo Zagreb by a one-goal margin, then Zagreb lost to Chelsea and Salzburg lost to Chelsea and Milan, the Rossoneri would qualify as runners-up.

These are the criteria for defining who would pass the turn in the event of a tie on points:

  • Goal difference in head to head matches
  • Gigher number of goals scored in head-to-head matches
  • Higher number of goals scored away from home in direct matches
  • Total goal difference
  • Higher number of goals overall
  • Higher number of overall away goals
  • Highest number of wins in the group
  • Highest number of away wins in the group
  • Conduct, lower disciplinary score based on cards
  • UEFA coefficient
