In fairness, it did actually seem that way at one point, with the Rossoneri considering several names, most importantly, Dusan Vlahovic.
However, there was also an interest in two young Greek strikers, both of whom actually ended up together at Premier League side Brighton. Those were Charalampos Kostoulas and Stefanos Tzimas, though the interest in him ended much sooner, it seems.
Gimenez and the Greek(s)?
There is a very clear elephant in the room, and that is that neither has really done much since moving to England, something that the Diavolo cannot really afford. Presenting a first issue.
In that sense, they are luxury strikers, ones that a Premier League club, ultimately, will be able to manoeuvre with, in several senses.
With the financial differences, the investment required for either of the Greek duo would require them to hit the ground running. Then, they would also arrive with the pressure of that famous number nine shirt, as well as the pressure of expectation from the Rossoneri that demand success.
For a pair of strikers that are 19 and 18, there are questions about whether they would actually be an upgrade to the squad…

Perhaps, though, the answer would have been the experienced route. Someone who has performed well in Europe for several years now, and knows their way to the competitions which bring the real revenue.
That, of course, would be Vangelis Pavlidis. At only 26, he represents a much more experienced option than the two aforementioned names, and even Gimenez, whilst not being too old.
Last year, he hit 19 goals in the Liga Portugal, with another seven coming in the Champions League. Before that, 29, 12 and 18 goal seasons in the Eredivisie with AZ Alkmaar.
Someone proven, with experience and, more importantly, goals. An easy option, almost, but one that Milan did not, and have not taken. If Vlahovic is no longer an option, Milan could certainly do a lot worse than the Greek.
