GdS: Adaptation and sacrifice – how Tonali became a symbol of Pioli’s Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

Sandro Tonali has been one of the revelations of the season for AC Milan as he has rocketed in confidence after a first season that was certainly an adaptation period.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) report how Pioli said the following before the start of the season: “Sandro has changed compared to last year, I have found a much stronger player.” That free-kick goal at San Siro against Cagliari in August was just the start of a series of decisive contributions.

Tonali grew up dreaming of playing for Milan and in the summer of 2020, as soon as he learned of Milan’s interest, he did not even want to listen to the proposals of the other clubs who were interested in him.

He joined on a loan with option to buy deal and a year later – after a difficult season of acclimatisation – he decided to reduce his salary in order to facilitate the negotiation between Milan and Brescia over his buy-out. Since then, important goals and match-winning contributions have made him a real leader.

He has risen to the level of Bennacer and Kessie, becoming not only a leader of this team but a symbol of the project too, based around signing young talent and letting them develop with patience and the right surroundings. Now, Sunday represents an opportunity and what could be a very memorable day for Sandro.
