GdS: Legacy, condition and Qatar dreams – next two months crucial in Ibrahimovic’s future

By Oliver Fisher -

Zlatan Ibrahimovic faces a difficult decision regarding his future and it is one that must arrive in the next three months, a report claims.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report how the Swede has missed four matches since he limped off during the first half of the 0-0 draw against Juventus on January 23 and Achilles discomfort will keep him out of tomorrow’s game against Udinese.

The next few months will be decisive for understanding what his future will hold, because despite the fact Ibrahimovic has repeatedly stressed a desire to keep playing, his body is perhaps giving him other signs.

Ibra has been training in the gym for some time and accelerating his recovery makes no sense as it could put an end to his season and, perhaps, also to his career. That is not in the plans of the 40-year-old, but what is in his mind is the World Cup in Qatar.

He wants to lead Sweden into the tournament but first they must beat Czech Republic in a play-off in March and then beat the winner of Russia-Poland to reach a World Cup and play in one after 16 years without.

Regarding Milan, Ibrahimovic has always said he wanted to leave the Rossoneri with at least one trophy to show. His legacy is clear as the likes of Saelemaekers, Leao, Calabria, Diaz, Rebic, Tonali and other have grown under his guidance – and also thanks to the great work of Pioli of course – but Zlatan would like to close a circle with a trophy.

Ibrahimovic also has no problems continuing with Milan if the club want him but he has the highest salary in the squad at €7m net and the management, who are inclined to offer a renewal, would certainly propose a reduction.

Maldini, Massara and Gazidis have reiterated several times and in several interviews that they will not preclude the possibility of extending his contract despite his age, though the parties will have to make more assessments related to Ibrahimovic’s physical condition and ambition. The next two months will be decisive.
